GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Synopsis Confirms Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah

YsxEmBn.png

Press Release: Following the global success of 2014’s Godzilla and this year’s Kong: Skull Island, comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species — thought to be mere myths — rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film, which begins principal photography today, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring films), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), the latter two of which are reprising their Godzilla roles.

Their co-stars include Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in her feature film debut, Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), O’Shea Jackson, Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently scheduled for release on March 22, 2019.

Kong: Skull Island recently opened with $167 million at the domestic box office and $565 million worldwide. Middleditch had a small cameo in the film voicing an off-camera character.

Michael Dougherty Confirmed to Direct GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS

kgdWUUi.jpg

After first being hired to run the Godzilla universe writing room, Krampus director Michael Dougherty has now been tapped to direct the next installment in the monster movie franchise as well.

When news first broke that Dougherty and his Krampus co-writer Zach Shields would be penning the sequel, reports surfaced that Dougherty would also helm the pic, but insiders said then that the deal was only to write the sequel, not direct. After months of work in the writers room, Legendary eventually extended an offer for him to direct as well.

In October 2015, Legendary and Warner Bros. made a joint announcement that all future King Kong and Godzilla films would be developed by Legendary and distributed by Warner Bros., starting with Kong: Skull Island in March. Legendary currently holds a distribution deal with Universal, but in order to re-team Godzilla and King Kong, Legendary decided to send the rights back over to Warner Bros. to be able to create this new “ecosystem” of giant super-species, both classic and new.

Godzilla 2 is currently dated for Mar. 22, 2019, with Godzilla vs. Kong set for May 29, 2020.

Dougherty has strong ties to Legendary, having written and directed Trick ‘r Treat, one of Legendary’s first productions, which has become a cult hit. He then teamed with Shields on the recent Christmas horror pic Krampus.

Godzilla fans will have to wait a little longer to see the long-awaited sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 hit monster movie.

Warner Bros. has pushed back Godzilla 2 from June 8, 2018, to a new date of March 22, 2019. The studio also has earmarked May 29, 2020, for the sure-to-be epic Godzilla vs. Kong. ROGUE ONE Director Gareth Edwards Exits GODZILLA Sequel

S8Vn8Kv.jpg

Director Gareth Edwards has parted ways with Godzilla 2. Edwards, who directed Legendary and Warner Bros.’s 2014 monster movie, was slated to return for the sequel after he wrapped work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opens December 2016.

But the filmmaker, who broke through with the low-budget 2010 movie Monsters, has left the project. Godzilla 2 is a priority for the company, which is staking out a cinematic monster universe featuring creatures such as Godzilla and King Kong, and which has a March 22, 2019 release date.

Reasons for the departure remain hazy. Some say Edwards wants a break from back-to-back big budget tentpoles while other sources tell THR that the filmmaker was feeling rushed to meet a timeline. Legendary and Warners are now on the hunt for new filmmaker.

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Director Gareth Edwards Exits 'Godzilla 2'

The first movie was kinda boring. I guess I'm not too upset with him leaving. However, I am upset about this ridiculous 5 year gap between movies.

The first movie was kinda boring. I guess I'm not too upset with him leaving. However, I am upset about this ridiculous 5 year gap between movies.
Yeah ...his version lacked excitement and wasted Cranston and Watanabe and instead gave us a boring performance from Aaron Taylor Johnson and we barely fucking got much Godzilla screen time , I don't get why the gap is so large , Godzilla in 2014 grossed 200 mil plus domestically and 530 mil on a 160 mil budget , not a smash but good enough to get a sequel in a reasonable time.

Want Kong: Skull Island.
Massively Want Godzilla 2.
NEED new Toho Godzilla (even if it's Burning Godzilla again)
Don't want Kong vs Godzilla.

I'm not unhappy Edwards is leaving Godzilla 2. I don't think he really got what makes G. work. Godzilla 14 felt too much like his Monsters movie - all shadows and hints up until the end. That works for a human-focused drama like Monsters was, but that's not was Godzilla should be about. The big battle with the MUTO in the airport just killed it for me. We finally get to see the big G in all his majestic glory and.... you cut to a friggin TV? Your title character is only onscreen for 8 minutes. 8 minutes. I think Juliet Binoche's character got more airtime and she was dead about 10 minutes into the movie :p

Screw KK vs. Godzilla. Give me a re-imagined Ghidora, Anguirus or Destroyah. Hell, re-imagine King Ceasar or Gigan if you want an anthropomorphic antagonist. Just not KK. (who's dead anyway after he lost to a couple of biplanes with machine guns)

(yes i am a huge Godzilla / kaiju nerd)

I too am alright with that director leaving. He seemed too only accomplish enough to have a product superior to the 1998 one. Movie was dull, little of Godzilla, and the most wooden lead I've ever seen. That was kick ass. He's got personality. Him not having it in this movie is the directors fault.
