Animals in general are tough to get right with CGI, even today. And yeah, it looked like crap. I presume you're talking about the CGI tigers

Also some of the effects from the opening battle scene, and the reveal of the Colosseum looks especially bad too, like Lord of the Rings crumbling bridge jump in Moria bad.

its aiiight, but will always be a Braveheart knockoff to my eyes.
And it needed more Richard Harris.

I voted 9.5 . I don't really give out perfect 10s. Well I only give 1 film a perfect 10 and that's Pulp Fiction......but I digest......Gladiator is definitely in my top 10 of all time and I give it an easy 9.5!! Love it.

The scene where they are in the Coliseum for the first time is awesome!

You know, the movie as a whole is kind of disjointed, but I remember the battle scenes in Oliver Stone's Alexander being pretty great. Haven't seen it since the theater though.

GOAT lvl, seen it probably 8+ times by now, will never get old. Joachim Phoenix performance is fucking stellar. The whole thing is tight. Proximo, I think Oliver Reed, also excellent. Fucking Hans Zimmer is a GOD, music for that movie is absolutely unreal. And literally EVERY epic since then has been a cheap knockoff, 300 notwithstanding (and I even like Troy, but only because I have a mancrush on Brad Pitt and his epic mane in that piece of trash). Gladiator is fucking boss.

I give it an 8. All of the historical inaccuracies perturb me. I saw an interview and when Ridley Scott was asked about that his answer was that the point was to get the feel of the era right and entertain. Get people's interests in the period up, which it did, and people will learn the accurate history for themselves. I liked that.

That's a cool name. But it's also one of the things that annoyed me. Maximus wasn't his name it was more of a descriptor or nickname. So was Meridius which meant from near the sea I think. He really wouldn't have been called maximus ever except when people used his full name. He'd be called Auleus or Decimus. Decimus might have been a nickname too so all we really know about his real name is Auleus and we don't know if that's is first name or family name. Auleus Decimus Meridias Maximus.

On the same note I love cool roman era type names. I like the name Oenomaeus if I ever have a kid.

Russell Crowe had the ideal man physique in Gladiator

Not all fake and lean with gym muscles, just real man thickness without being fat

As close to perfection as we will ever see in a movie.

The story, acting, pace, depth of characters is stars aligning, it's Saving Private Ryan, LotR etc. level.

I half expected the edgy hippies to come in here and show us how bad ass they are say it's shit but I am impressed it's not being rated lower than a 7.5.

One of the few films a man can cry at aswell, we are allowed a couple ain't we?

    This.

Its a beautiful film with great action sequences.

    But, plot-wise, its predictable.

Always thought Quinton Phoenix's performance was poor, and the praise he received as the film's 'breakout role' is laughably overrated.
