When a Roman General is betrayed, and his family murdered by an emperor's corrupt son, he comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge.

Gladiator is one of my favorite movies of all time, easily a top 10 film for me. I’d rate this movie a 9/10

It’s one of the best films in the last 20 years imo

10/10 all day. Struggle to think of any large scale Rome/Greece type movies that come close in the past 18 years. Any suggestions?

Enjoying Gladiator feels like a complete ethical betrayal of history and film making. Somehow I still give it an 8.5.

All kinds of things. The obscene historical mashups and ripping off other films too.

To be fair I think unlike say Braveheart the history is distant enough and unconnected directly to modern nationalism that its inaccuracy isn't as much of a problem for me.

At the time especially I think people were just happy to see Scott back making decent films as well, more straight forward than his best work but still well made with a lot of good performances.

Best modern Scott film for me is Matchstick Men.

I adopted my cat from my vet and his name is Max...didn't want to change it because he actually answers to Max, but we wanted to make it better so we call him Maximus.

Great fucking movie all around definitely 9.5 or 10/10.

That makes sense compared to Braveheart, but for me it's kind of the opposite- I really could not give less of a crap about the William Wallace mythology/history.

Credit to the actors for sure. Aside from a few really memorable lines though, I don't feel like they had all that much to work with throughout. It was like "garbage garbage garbage...Great Line...garbage garbage..."

And when it came out my buddy explained to me why the CGI was not going to hold up well, and he was right. I can't remember what reasons he gave unfortunately.

Doesn't matter, it still hits me on some kind of genetic level. It's shit and I love it.

I’ve honestly never watched Braveheart. I’ve seen bits and pieces and know how it ends but never the full film.
