So the German people are more interested in their economy than safety and terrorism? Call me crazy but if we had a litany of jihadi attacks here in the states, my voting priority would be to contain and expel that rather than money in the bank I can't use if I'm blown up on a bus or a train.

"Stupid" is really harsh and simply inaccurate when measured relative to the rest of the world but as much as I love my people, there's definitely a sort of herd mentality built into the culture where we just follow the leader and the rules. You have to follow the rules, Germany loves rules and there are a shit ton of rules; an almost maddening depth of bureaucracy.

The thing is this: whether it’s SPD or CDU leading doesn’t make that much of a difference.

They‘ve been in a coalition for a long time anyway, so it sometimes feels like one big party.

The % of votes for the CDU (Merkel‘s party) were exceptionally low in this election.

So she won the election but her power decreased. That might be another reason for the markets getting nervous tbf.

Obviously they are not actual Nazis. But the party has already been dragged through the mud by the media, and other politicians who draw comparison to Nazis, triggering a sense of engineered shame and guilt among German population. Associating with the party leads to a direct loss of social status. Voting for Merkel is a "safe option" in the sense that she is atleast not a left-over from the DDR era, and can bring economic growth, although at the expense of German national identity. The socialist alternatives can only bring about stagnation.

German propaganda machine is much more over the top and unchecked by a right-wing alternative, than America's. Here is how they portray Trump to the German masses:

Even more so because they absolutely loved Obama.
