Just saw Bas Rutten became the new league ambassador for Karate Combat which is a new organization focusing on full contact karate. what do you guys think of this?

Mission statement: "Elevating and promoting the sport of karate world wide."

Why not, more banging the better.

Is it karate history week or something? The threads have been popping up like herpy lips.

I'm honestly impressed that they were able to get the karate.com domain--must have been pricey! In any case, it's better than the tournament tag you usually see, but it's still not really the ideal ruleset for old-style karate. For the sport kumite folks who want something harder, though, it's a good option. Of course, there has already been the World Combat League (WCL) for quite some time, doing essentially the same thing. That's the kickboxing circuit that Wonderboy Thompson tore up before joining the UFC, for those who are unfamiliar.

I was thinking the exact same thing - karate.com must have cost a fortune to get a hold of.

It's a nice idea but it's more suited to point fighters that want full contact. The rules pretty much favour point fighters.

Definitely interesting but it's been done before - they don't tend to last very long though. Let's see if this does.

I was very surprised to see Rafael Aghayev fighting full contact - that's very interesting. In case anyone wants to see a WKF legend fight in full contact here:

Alot better than any of the point-fighting karate we normally see in competitions. Not sure of the ruleset though, of the fights I've watched they're all moving/fighting like they are still in a WKF style tournament.
Wonder how long it will be until it turns into a generic above the waist kickboxing league though, will their styles shift to resemble that of a kickboxer rather than a point karateka fighting full contact? And will kickboxers with no karate background be able to join? I would think someone from something like the WCL would be very competitive here especially with the league in its infancy and most of its competitors fairly green to full contact competition.
A good MMA striker could also make waves here having already grown accustom to fighting with the small gloves

Biggest pos ever.

-lied to daniel-san to wash his car and fence for free, then made a sob story to win pity points

-stole a black belt from a competitor so he or she couldn't compete that day, rendering their camp pointless

-knew danny boy was gonna lose against Johnny with that look in his eye, so he made him blow his knee out

-then violently assaulted sensei KK when he just went to ask what was going on

pretty cool to me. bas and duane are both karate guys that cross trained in MT.

i hope it doesnt go the way of the WCL. This is probably going to be something similar, but perhaps do better since its being put on by Bas the MMA fighter, rather than texas walker ranger, unfortunately Norris portrays the karate nerd stereo type. My old coach wanted to me do the WCL way back when, but I didnt feel i was ready for it at the time. They fought with shin pads, but its not MT, im glad I didnt because I probably would of got my ass handed to me Raymond Daniels style. I do know that Norris was paying all the competitors on the Team $2000 a month for fighting on WCL. That is really good pay for fighting, and it was monthly! probably one of the reasons why it went under. I think if WCL was made in 1985 instead of 2005 it probably would have done alot better, but at that time the world was so MMA crazy it didnt really stand a chance.

just read the rule set I was thinking it would be cool to compete in this but im guessing its pro level. the rules are kinda weird though, girls cant wear a groin protector, no uppercuts, no knee, no elbow.

At this point, you're basically a pro anyways, might as well get paid

i would like to gain more experience before making the jump, alot of guys around my fight exp locally have made the jump, to quick IMO and they are not doing too well as pros.
