"Tyson was so great until D'Amato and (Jimmy) Jacobs passed away. He was a great, great champ. The speed on his punches... not the speed of how the threw them, I'm talking about the 'speed' in which the brain tells the muscle to 'throw' - was

Trainer Ray Arcel about Tyson:
"He could have fit in at any time in the heavyweight ranks. He could punchhard enough to have beaten anybody if he could hit them. The guy's a natural fighter."

Eddie Futch about Tyson:
"I think he has the potential to be the greatest of all, because he has two things going for him: terrific hand speed and the power, combined. He can lose 11 2/3 rounds of a fight and then take you out with one shot"

Jose Torres , NY Boxing commisioner:
'Mike Tyson is so fast and so powerful that it is almost impossible to resist the guy's punching power. Wherever he hits you, you're going to feel it. He reminds me maybe of George Foreman, but Tyson's much faster than Foreman. He reminds me in style of Rocky Marciano, but he's much faster than Marciano, and he's much bigger, 217 pounds. And he's faster and much more powerful than Joe Frazier, with a better hook. I really have no one to compare him with in terms of punching power.'
Stacey Mckinly about Tyson:
'He sees a guy beggin' in the street and he gives him a hundred dollars. I'll say, 'Man, y'know the guy's just gonna spend it on crack!' But he says,
'I leave it to Allah to judge him.'

Commentator after live watching Mike Tyson fight Mike Jameson:
'He throws flurries and punches like a welterweight. Very seldom do you see heavyweights throw combinations of 5, 6 punches. But Mike Tyson does it'.

Edit: Something did not quite work out here :) Thanks anyway

Tyson dominated a division with fighters much bigger than he and did so in the most impressive and exciting fashion. He too inspired me to train his style.

Good thread.

16th best puncher my ass... I'm not even a Tyson fan but he is definately a better puncher than 16th

Nice story about Mike told by his old sparring partner, Joe Egan.

Awsome thread btw, favourite boxer ever. Rememeber as a kid his fights being on Terrestrial TV in Ireland when he started climbing the ranks.

The build up to the Bruno fight was on BBC2 for 10 hours and that's with no breaks, good times.

I am Tyson'ed since 86 vs Spinks. Here in germany the fight was 5 AM and i went from clubbing extra home to watch. The moment i watched the 30 min introducing of Mike Tyson .... they showed the vid his management has put out. All his previous fights (compilaton of amateur fights ++... all knockouts. 1 hit knockouts.) ... this stunned me. And afterwards the Spink fight.

I loved how he walked in the ring.... black simple trunks and black simple boots. nothin more nothing less. I hated how his life has been troubled... by himself, by others and so on. But i know... the Tyson he was especially in his prime years under cus d'amato.... he cant forget, and its a part of him. Thats why i like him.... whatever "bad" he has done.

'Real freedom is having nothing. I was freer when I didn't have a cent'

His father should not have died so early. So he would mentally more stable... and should get stronger overall.
