The UFC's p4p fighter rankings seem pretty arbitrary and more of a popularity contest rather than on actual merit.

    UFC's P4P Fighter Rankings
    1. Demetrious Johnson
    2. Conor McGregor
    3. Daniel Cormier
    4. Stipe Miocic
    5. Max Holloway
    6. Georges St-Pierre
    7. TJ Dillashaw
    8. Tyron Woodley
    9. Tony Ferguson
    10. Robert Whittaker
    11. Cody Garbrandt
    12. Khabib Nurmagomedov
(Conor, who hasn't fought in nearly 2 years, is higher ranked than GSP, who moved up in weight and beaten a bigger fighter?)
    ______________________________

Based on FightMetric and Sherdog's statistics on fighters' skills in striking, standup grappling, and ground grappling, this is what the P4P rankings would look like:

I've always found it simpler to rank each fighter 1-10 in a bunch of categories and then compare the totals. It's subjective as hell, but so is the idea of P4P itself.

    Example:
    1. Jones
    Offensive grappling- 10
    Defensive grappling- 10
    Offensive striking- 9
    Defense striking- 8
    Power- 6
    Cardio- 8
    TOTAL: 51/60 (85%)

You might be looking at the wrong bracket. DC is at 5th for offensive grappling: (takedown per 15 min, takedown %)
    1. Khabib Nurmagomedov (5.85, 45%)
    2. Georges St-Pierre (4.16, 74%)
    3. Demetrious Johnson (3.54, 56%)
    4. Stipe Miocic (2.35, 37%)

Yeah you're right , my bad number 4 for defensive grappling ground grappling , however pound for pound ground offence ( submission seeking ) shouldn't number 1 go to someone like Maia ? ... i'd of thought so , also Cormier should at least be the top 3 in offensive stand up grappling.

Yeah P4P does nothing for me, but it's good to see some statistics.

P4P is simply an imaginary place where there are no manlets and everyone is the same size. It also doesn’t account for power, chin and eating shots from much more powerful men.

This time, statistics actually is pretty accurate. Khabib has the most points when all areas of fighting are combined (P4P ranking on the right):

Could be wrong, but he's either making fun of the other dude, or implying that statistics rarely tell the whole story.

You're right! In a true p4p list, Maia would be #1 for offensive ground grappling.

For this list, I'm just taking the fighters on the UFC's p4p ranking to see what happens when we use stats to rank them.

To my surprise (sort of), Khabib is the #1 P4P, followed by DJ and GSP.

Stats are fine, but Khabib hasn't faced the # of top 5 guys that some other guys have (that's just one example). WHO you are fighting is gonna go a long way in determining some of those stats right? Don't get me wrong, I think Barb is a legit top level guy and Khabib just ruined him over 15 minutes. But there's so many variables at play that stats are telling one small part of a much larger story.
