In Gimple's defense...
Frank Dillane wanted off the show dating back to midway through season 3, so this was something the new showrunners had to deal with coming in, not something they planned.
He just wanted to pursue other projects and there's speculation that being stuck to FTWD was taking a toll on him.
If they were going to kill him off wouldn't it make more sense to happen at the dam? And whatever happened after the dam? I wanted to see the fallout from that, but the show writers seem to want to pretend season 3 never happened even though it was by far the best season. The should have killed off Morgan.
It was unexpected, I'll give them that.
