After the shooting in Alexandria, VA, in which a far-left Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) supporter shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), the Left naturally blamed the gun and tried to use the shooting as a way to advocate for gun control. However, the FBI's report on the shooting actually proves that further gun control wouldn't have stopped the shooting.

Charles Cooke points out in National Review that according to the FBI's report, the shooter, James Hodgkinson, purchased a SKS 7.62mm caliber rifle and 9mm pistol in Illinois, a state that has the harsh gun laws that the Left calls for. Not only was each gun purchased after obtaining a background check, Hodgkinson had to obtain a license to even own a gun, which is mandatory for all gun owners in the state.

Hodgkinson was able to obtain these guns despite his previously facing charges of domestic abuse because, as Cooke pointed out, Hodgkinson was never convicted on those charges. Without a conviction, Illinois had to treat him as someone who was "innocent under the law."

Additionally, neither gun has ever been designated as an assault weapon, so Hodgkinson would have still been able to legally purchase those weapons even if the assault weapons ban that was signed into law under President Clinton was still intact.

Cooke also notes that open carry is prohibited on the baseball field where the shooting took place, nullifying the leftist argument that Virginia's open-carry laws were to blame for the shooting.

In other words, everything short of a gun ban wasn't enough to prevent Hodgkinson from obtaining his weapons.

Even if gun control would have prevented it, gun control is illegal.

Gun control is a losing battle for the left and for good reason. Dems need to drop this issue just like the Republicans quietly abandoned their opposition to gay marriage after the SCOTUS ruling.

Boycott Conor McGregor. Stream the cards he's on.

Yes it's a flawed way to look at it anyway but this is more like a 'rebuttal' to several statements made by the left, including articles in the MSM

They will bring it up as soon as they have more actual influence in American politics again.
Right now, they're actually quieter than they have been in the past.

I don't know, after the big push for gun control in the wake of Sandy Hook it seems the gun control crowd lost a lot of steam. It still gets mentioned by the usually suspects and on the state and local level there could be gains for the Dems in terms of gun control but at the national level I think it'll be a while until we get any gun control legislation of note that has any chance of passing.

But what about "Reasonable, common sense, gun control"?

Did they try that?

Are they positive "strengthened" background checks wouldn't have prevented this tragedy - maybe some sort of effort with the word "enhanced" attached to it?

I mean, Jesus - we're losing 93 million kids a day to the nra. Won't somebody somewhere do something?

The only part of the report I would like to contest is the SKS not being on the assault weapons ban.
The typical SKS feeds from a 10 round fixed magazine, loaded by stripper clips. You can purchase different magazines for them that are detatchable 20-30 round box mags, if they had those they were on the AWB. Also Norinco (chinese military) exported a variant that used standard AK magazines. Those were on the ban as well

I've always agreed with this. I think Democrats would make a huge rebound if they'd just give up this idiotic idea to get rid of as many guns as possible.

Which would make it a non-AW. Unless media outlets have specific information about the shooter using a model with detachable mags, they shouldn't refer to an SKS as an assault rifle imo. It also wasn't on the Democrat's/Feinstein's 2013 assault weapons list.

Either way, this also shows how goofy this debate is imo.

Any stupid feature ban can be gotten around, any idiot with a welder could make a high capacity magazine out of a smaller one.
A semi-auto is a semi auto, and will never be a 'fully semi automatic assault weapon' for all I care

Gun control isn't purely about preventing gun crimes outright. That isn't something that can just happen overnight.

It's about making crime investigation more efficient therefore punishing individuals connected to gun crimes more regularly, quickly, and completely.

This is story supports that argument. This man was licensed and there were records of his purchases so they were able to quickly gather all the information they needed on this man.

Quieter because a lot of them are ending up in jail for violent acts.

You just love pulling random shit right out of your ass, don't you?

Oooh! Gun control isn't purely about preventing gun crimes outright... Just shut the fuck up.

This guy was the poster boy for following gun laws. During his recent anti-Trump protest, he even carried an official Illinois Firearms Owner Identification laminate card - whilst being in Virginia - a state that doesn't require certain citizens to display a yellow star on the outside of their clothing.

And ask Canada how their failed long-gun registration program made anything more efficient.

Meh, story plainly proves that gun control doesn't do anything. Man obeys laws, buys legal guns, snaps and goes to shoot people cuz his fee fees got hurt.

Prohibited people just steal guns, buy them on the black market (ever realize guns come across our southern border on the regular, or know why Chinese guns can't be imported anymore? Hint, China was shipping containers full of Norinco 56s to California) Or blow up federal buildings with fertilizer, or bomb marathons with a pressure cooker, or do something called a straw purchase.

Gun control only applies to people who are responsible enough to go through all the process of owning a gun legally. Criminals don't give a shit about gun control...If the left is pushing for that...in the near future, white vans and machetes will be banned as well....
