Fastest way you've seen a friend ruin their life?

I've had a number of friends kill themselves, but I've only had a few go down extended dark paths that essentially lead nowhere.

A guy I went to high school with was convicted of murder a few years back. We ran in similar circles for a bit, but were never right friends. he was always in the edge, but this was a big leap.

A friend of mine got hooked on some pretty hardcore shit when I was in high school. We were all trying cocaine, heroine, and this kind of stuff. But it didn't become a habit for any of us except this one guy, who later overdosed. I think we were all 19
 
My friend was in a bad relationship with an older woman who liked things tempestuous and would routinely provoke him to act up. He was a lovely guy but was an alcoholic - you'd never have guessed, though, he was a huge natural athlete, good-looking and charming. They eventually broke up and he moved on, his life got much better.

18 months or so later they were back together and you could tell he was trying to convince himself this was a good idea. Within 6 months she was pregnant. They had the baby and after another 6 months he killed himself with a deliberate heroin overdose.
 
A childhood friend of mine overdosed and died on heroin last year.

26 years old, that shit was so sad I cried like a little girl at his funeral. I've had a few friends go like that and it's just aweful, especially for the family. There's always this embarracment they have to deal with. It's worse than suicide imo

One of my best friends hooked up with this dumb bitch and ended up in a nightmare relationship where they were breaking up every 2/3 weeks. Then he'd mope around, listening to Pink Floyd all day. One night we're sitting in a bar and he starts telling me he can't hack it anymore. I said the usual bullshit that you do and didn't think much of it. A few nights later he comes up to my place. I was just getting stoned, watching tv. I knew straight away there was something wrong with him. I didn't know what it was about him but the fucking alarm was going off in my head. He didn't stay long but after he left I thought I should go after him and bring him back, but I didn't. I was stoned and just shrugged it off.
2 days later I get a knock on the door. 2 cops standing there. He'd gone to his girl's place that night. They argued. He stabbed her 14 times. Then he took everything he owned to a charity shop and handed himself in. Life. Fuckin tragedy.

Drug addiction is fucked.

I've done hard drugs too, and it's weird how that one person just completely loses control with it. Luckily I've always been really cautious with hard drugs and have known when not to buy more, or when to just lose someone's number

Nothing too serious.

One of my best friends growing up married a complete nightmare of a woman. Just a domineering, critical, nightmare of a woman.
I only see him once in a blue moon nowadays but when I do he seems totally defeated and it bums me out.
