The Problem Is Facebook, Not Cambridge Analytica

As offputting as this story is (and I’ve essentially abandoned using Facebook) I think this issue is more complicated than it seems. Does Facebook have a duty to understand how it’s customers use data or how their product is used? I’m not sure. On one hand we don’t require it for other products (some exceptions probably exist). I do want legislation that requires social media to prevent attacks against our democracy, like Russian bots for example. Outside of that laws really can be intrusive. Can we tell Facebook they can’t sell to certain customers? I really don’t think we can (Facebook can’t exist without customers buying data).

Facebook shouldn't have illegally shared information without user permission. It was the wrong thing to do.

My tech sector stocks are getting BTFO.

Was listening to this subject on the radio this morning. Facebook basically made them promise in writing that they wouldn't do anything with the information, I think. At best, Facebook can sue them out of business. It's reprehensible that Facebook didn't go public with this and refer it to the FBI. Don't forget that the villain in this is still Cambridge Analytica.

Do you really think CA are villains? We are seeing a shift in power, big media and established politicians are losing power to internet. This is not just happening to the US, but its the US that Facebook, Youtube, Twitter are at and where things will set the tone for the future.

I think government is trying to break down Facebook to control it some way for next elections.

Everytime you agree to one of those stupid games in Facebook you are giving information away

Sending out thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this. Standing in solidarity for secure data...

Stock still taking a nosedive................

I dont know shit about computers or ad algorithms but it isnt just having a public FB page. They know what I like. Like stock and investing stuff. They have my profile. They probably know more about me than I do. They know my interests and tailor ads around me. We are the products. We are what is being sold.

We need Steve Jobs back

Steve Jobs was a shitbag and he can stay right the fuck where he is thank you very much.

So how did they get this info?

Did people have their facebook public....and these guys run some sort of program to collect all that info? Or did they do something illegal?

Sorry but if you leave your profile to public....uhhhh thats your fault.
They harvested the personal information of 50 million people without their consent. <{danayeah}>
You can do the rest of your homework yourself.

Between this, people getting into severe trouble over social media, and criminals outing themselves in the same process you would think people would learn enough to slow their use or stop altogether. And that's not including the studies showing that addiction to social media is causing severe mental issues across the board.

But no, gotta keep posting pictures of god knows what non stop to be popular and make others think you're cool. Guess people don't care?

Mine are doing fine. FB is still crashing tho. Zuck sold some at like 180 something right before the crash. 165 now. He sold more than some actually. tens of millions. He regularly does it but small hope he gets busted for insider trading. lol. I want him behind bars.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg summoned by UK lawmakers to give evidence on Cambridge Analytica scandal

  • MP Damian Collins has asked Zuckerberg to give an account "of this catastrophic failure of process" in regards to data being given to Cambridge Analytica.

Zuckerberg and Sandberg will reportedly stay quiet on Cambridge Analytica until after audit
  • Tech insiders, lawmakers and even Facebook employees have called for input from Facebook's highest executives.
  • It appears unlikely the CEO and COO will address concerns in the near term.
  • Facebook said Monday it was hiring a digital forensic firm to conduct an audit of Cambridge Analytica. By Tuesday morning, Facebook's audit had already hit a roadblock.

Good. Make the stock crash even more hopefully. They are in hiding.

That is where I think the line was crossed for Facebook. Facebook kids. That is desperation. Tons of groups, child advocacy groups, scientists, child development specialists came out against a Facebook app towards kids. They showed tons of studies what you just said. It causes mental health problems. Public opinion was totally against this. Everyone was. The Media. But Facebook went ahead anyway. They usually are good at being trained dogs and SJW. But they didn't back down this time and I think that says a lot. They are desperate. Facebook Kids was the tipping point that showed a psychological change of the company.
