The Soviet Union falling apart was different than states succeeding, I will kind of agree with that, but the relationship has enough similarities, and the remaining ties between the two countries are similar enough to make the analogy.

Your whole premise is that Yakunovich who was democratically elected was supported by Russia, but Yakunovic himself said that Ukraine should remain whole.

Without even going into the whole deal that Ukraine underwent with Russia to give up their nukes.
