With Luke Rockhold vs David Branch coming up, I think it's safe to say that a lot of people are writing this fight off as a tune up fight for Luke.

However, these tune up fights are often lose-lose situations. Win and no one gives you credit, lose and you'll sky rocket the other fighters.

What are the best examples of fighters taking a tune up fight and end up getting MURK'D?

- Jacare vs Whittiker
- Gunni vs Ponzanibio
- Tony Ferguson vs Groovy (even tho groovy lost, Ferg was almost MURK'D)
- Okami vs Botsch
- Rockhold vs Bisping

This weekend: Branch vs Rockhold

People said that Conor would be a tune up fight for Aldo.

Was there seriously someone who though Whittaker would be a tune up for Jacare? I predicted a Jacare win but I didn't for one fucking second think that it would be a tune up.

Not sure I agree on some of the examples. Branch is a pretty legit MW. There's a reason he was resigned. Also pretty sure Lando was just a late replacement to a drop out more than he was a straight "tune up fight".

If you remember, Jacare was next in line for the title, he didn't want the long layoff so he took a "gimme fight" with Whittiker. A the time, no one gave Robert a chance, myself included.

He was seen as someone that Jacre would dominate

They keep writing him off like he's a bum. I haven't seen him fight yet, but I suspect he is a lot better than CM punk.

Crocop vs Gonzaga

Liddell vs rashad

Phil Davis vs rumble

Anderson vs weidman

Sokoudjou vs Little Nog

Fedor vs Werdum
Came here to mention Soko/Lil Nog.

Disagree with Fedor/Werdum tho, Doom was a proven top HW on a win streak, and anyone with any knowledge of mma knew he was very much a threat to anyone.

None of the fights TS posted are tune up fights. As someone already said, I'd guess Pulver vs Lauzon

Lol how was Jacare/ Whittiker a tune up fight?

Most of those are TERRIBLE examples, for the record. Don't think you know what a tune up fight is. You've listed a #1 contender fight, two short notice replacement rights, and a fight where one guy won in a Hail Mary sprint for the finish. Even Nelson/ Ponzanibio, the betting lines were about even.

So, terrible list to being with.

An example of a tune up fight gone wrong is like, Werdum vs JDS, where no one knew who the fuck JDS was and Werdum clearly didn't take the fight seriously. It was meant to be another fight to rebuild Werdum after his loss to Arlovski, and it resulted in him leaving the UFC for a time.

Mousasi vs Hall
Mousasi vs Hall 2

Maybe not exactly a tune-up fight, but Dillashaw stepping up as a late replacement for the BW title shot, was being seen by many (myself included) as just a keep-Barao-busy type of fight. The rest is history:

As an old monster yushin fan the tim loss still stings. Branch is more than a live dog here
