Similarities:

  • Both had a boxing background. Conor was an All-Ireland champion in his youth. Jones won a Golden Gloves fight while a senior in high school
  • Both were world-class in their respective sports. Jones was a 3-time All Pro in the NFL, Conor a 2-division champ.
  • Both took a break from their sports and tried pro boxing in their physical primes (age 28 for Jones and 29 for Conor)
  • Both were tall and had a long reach for their weight class. Jones was 6'9" with an 88" reach according to BoxRec.com (not sure if that's true). Either way, Jones was kind of the prototype for the Klitschko/Fury/Joshua giants that we see now.

Differences:

  • The only difference is a big one. Jones went 6-0 in boxing with 5 knockouts, but fought journeyman. His best opponent was probably Mexican HW champ Fernando Montes. He then returned to football.
  • Unfortunately, since Jones never fought a Top 5 boxer, the comparison (and predictive value) of his career can't help when analyzing Conor-Floyd. Still, his multi-sport background is the most similar to Conor--a lot more than say Kimbo.

No. Conor is a mixed martial artist so he never stopped practicing boxing.
