My wife is away on business so I popped a film on to watch with my 6 year old daughter.

We do it every time her mum is out of town which is about once a month.

So the film tonight! E.T.

I am 38 and the last time I watched it was at the cinema when I was about her age with my old man.

I am ashamed to admit it, but, I cried throughout the whole film like a hormonal woman man child.

I’m a bit of a film buff so not easily swayed, BUT THIS!

I’ve sat through IRREVERSIBLE, Hostel, Saw and felt nothing. Ive sat through tear jerkers with my daughter like Bambi, The Good Dinosaur, the beginning of UP etc with no effect.

But my god! This film is pure emotional dynamite for the unsuspecting parent!

What are your thoughts on this Spielberg flick?

Surely this film must have a similar effect to those other grown men out there.

Here is my man card.

I watched it on 4k UHD for the first time since I was a kid recently and not only did it hold up but it also made me tear up when Elliot and E.T. were dying.

That's what made 80s movies so good. Even the dumbest movies on the surface had some serious issues and emotional moments. Harry and the Hendersons comes to mind.

There is a specific musical that gets me every time. Bawling like a mad man.

Love the movie. Its literally Speilberg. Though Jaws is still my favorite movie, E.T. is the Speilberg example.

I'm the same age and also last saw it as a kid at the movies.

I should revisit it.

I watched it about a year ago with my wife. We frequently looked at each other and said things like "How did we ever think this was good?", "Why did we like this?", "This is fucking terrible!" (while laughing hysterically), etc.

I'm not feeling it. It's just not good in any way.

saw it as a kid in the theater
it was good
showed it to a 6 year old i used to babysit around 2009, she loved it

I did not care for this movie. Not when I saw it as a child, and not when I saw it as an adult.

That was a dick measuring contest. Watch it alone or with your kid with no pretence.

I was a teenager when it came out. Watched it a second time maybe 15 years ago, but I should give it another go.

So, after E.T. and the daughter has gone to bed, you browse through the porn collection and pick one film?
Also, why is mom out of town once a month? Where is your woman going?
Why was your 'Official Man Card' revoked?

Saw it in the theater on release, didn't like it.
Laughed at the "penis breath" joke but that's about it. I hated the creature design even at 12 and honestly wanted to leave the theater.

Never liked it, tbh.

Your wife is having an affair.

… you must be lots of fun at parties.
I don't go to parties where they play movies for homos. J/k.
I can see why people like it but to me it just came off as a big emotionally manipulative story that didn't have much depth to it.

E.T. was originally shot by hunters at night, but that made it for a very short movie. They said the meat tasted like chicken. So, Spielberg went with the longer version.

Mom is out of town on business as mentioned.

‘Official man Card’ was reviled for crying at a children’s film as an adult.

Now go back to watching your porn collection.

ts cried at ET? hahahahahahahaha ,at least you handed in your man card, like a man!
