Does a fighter develop a glass/granite chin over time or is it genetics?

True that. Also I think it’s actually disgusting that Dana let him fight Gastelum after being knocked out literally like a week before, clearly couldn’t care less about his fighters
More evidence for their wrecklessness in the inevitable CTE lawsuit.

srs question I mean are people unable to control how strong their chin is? I mean I know a chin can get weaker over time, Michael bisping is a prime example. By this I basically mean how likely they are to be knocked out or rocked. I’m intrigued to see what people think because I feel like it’s something you just can’t control, if you have a strong chin you’re lucky & if you have a glass chin you’re unlucky, but do you think it it can improve? Stupid question but humour me pls I’m having a debate

You can be taught how to react better to getting hit, covering up or tying them up so you can get some time to recover. But yeah if you go lights out from a lovetap, there is nothing you can do about that, and yeah most likely you were born with it.

I kinda assumed that, cause I mean like overeems chin never improved. I guess it can only get weaker over time

Injuries are accumulated. For example if you strain your hamstring, scar tissue will form and that muscle will never be 100%. It may get to 99 but it’s compromised.

The KO phenomenon isn’t really understood. It’s theorised that it has to do with instability of the brain stem and unconsciousness is a defensive mechanism.

Similar to the reasoning behind buildings having a sway. The more rigid the more damage. So a bad chin to begin with is physiologically a good thing. Eg Reem seems more coherent than Gatche.

They believe a strong neck (Sub occipital and intrinsic cervical muscles) with proportional sized head help with maintaining consciousness Hence why someone like mark hunt has a good chin and Overeem doesn’t. However repeated blows to the jaw will effect the tmj (temporalmandibular joint) which will effect the sub occipital muscles. Plus for cervical rotation and lateral flexion (looking side ways and tilting your head) which results from Hooks and head kicks can damage those neck muscles. Hence why someone’s chin can deteriorate.

It can also be luck. If your not ready or if someone hits you on the perfect angle it can be lights out.

This is all theory btw

If you work out your neck, you'll never be KOed.

There's a 60+ year old guy where I work that does that and other even goofier shit regularly.

Are you actually being serious? That isn’t even a proper work out. Have you never stepped into a gym before in your life? Lol wow how can you be that stupid.

This might be the dumbest post ive ever seen on sherdog. Lol

Settle down a bit, friend. If you use the information super highway it's easy to find dozens of articles, including interviews with neurologists, that suggest strengthening your neck muscles is the best way to lessen your susceptibility to concussions, loss of motor control (ie wobbly legs), and being KOed. The gif was obviously a joke.

It baffles me on here how many people don’t get sarcasm. Especially if there’s a gif involved!

Right? I mean come the f*ck on who on the internet these days doesn’t speak fluent sarcasm by now, I mean what are you a bunch of cavemen? Pathetic

You can develope it. Mike Tyson had a special team that developed his head and neck routines to help to keep him from getting KOed.

I feel it only deteriotates but it has alot to do with being ko'd and the fear of being ko'd again.

Chuck seemed to have a granite chin, then after a while he started going out just from jabs.

Less weight you cut better your chin is.

Hydration helps protect your brain.

I have eaten thousands of cheeseburgers, chewing makes your jaw stronger, my jaw is currently better than prime hendo's
Maybe that explains why there are so few knockouts in WMMA. Their jaws are all super strong from all the meat they chow down on.

The ability to take a punch, very much like striking ability, is largely genetics. This is why the Irish have dominated in boxing, especially when it was more like a real fight in the bareknuckle era. Even so, there are techniques you can use to improve it.

You can develop a "granite chin" by building up your neck muscles and learning how to roll with punches (see Anderson Silva for the second - he looked like he got hit cleanly many times, but because he knew how to roll, they weren't that damaging). You develop a glass chin by getting knocked out repeatedly. Also, the older you get (and the more head trauma you've had), the harder it is to see or avoid punches that you used to be able to, so you're probably getting hit more cleanly more often.

You have to be Hawaiian living in Australia to have a granite chin

It is NOT all in the genetics taking a punch! FFS it is a human trait as Homo Sapiens that the chin is pressure point. It is NOT ever inherently "granite" in our species.

What can occur is that the human brain can be trained "conditioned" to control/ override the hardwired shutdown process in the brain. This allows some fighters to "appear" to have better chins than others. Nobody has a truly good chin at all! LMAO.

Anyone saying chin is all genetic is just dumb.

If it was all genetics then why can even the worst chinned HW take a FLW's shots all day long? If DJ bulked up to 300 lbs, he could take Cejudo's shots all day. Easy.

So you can clearly improve your chin by getting larger. If just getting larger works then getting stronger should work too.

Now even males of the same size have better chins than women of the same size. TJ could take Ronda Rousey's punches all day long. Why? They have more testosterone. Testosterone adds strength, bulk, and increases the size of your upper body especially: your neck, traps, lats, and other muscles that can stabilize your head.

In addition to working out those muscles, many fighters supplement with steroids which are testosterone. This definitely improves your chin. It's against the rules but it for sure improves your ability to take a shot.

The worst chinned fighters have both bad genetics and weak muscles and stuff. But even they can work on it and improve it.
