Do you think BJ's legacy suffered from him fighting way past his prime?

Obviously. What he did in his prime is amazing, a legend, but this 16-10 record will affect his legacy down the road. I think Khabib isn’t far from surpassing him.

Only casuals or noobs fail to acknowledge how great BJ was years ago.

BJ is more than a fighter. he embodied the spirit of the sport.

Dr. J isn't a top 10 basketball player of all time, but he is a legend because he embodied the spirit of that sport. high flying, joyous, and freestyling.

he'll always hold a special place in the sport.
DR J is a top 10. Prove yo self?

no... but his loss to Dennis Siver was tough and memories of his tippy toe fight with Edgar was CRINGE, especially after how competitive their first fight was. Prime BJ Penn went toe-to-toe with Matt Hughes, GSP, Jon Fitch, Machida, etc.

I think Rashad is hurting his legacy though

BJ was amazing to watch.

All fighters go out the hard way if they stick around long enough. Athletes in general do. No shame in that. Just ignore the retards who argue otherwise and you'll enjoy fighters much more.

He got Siver ed so yea , that shit is hard to get past

Or do you separate those results - Frankie 3, Yair, Siver - from his previous body of work?
His legacy is his potential. Which was never fully realized, because he was lazy, unfocused and arrogant.

Anyone still talking about Penn in a decade is a relative. Honestly, we should have stop caring about BJ Penn after his back to back losses to Edgar. I'm calling his win over Matt Hughes a fluke, based on Hughes fighting beyond a reasonable point.

In summation, BJ Penn's legacy is sketchy at best. Jens Pulver means more to me than BJ Penn. At least he can't attribute his losses to lack of effort.

I think he suffered from being too damn tough. He has always took the toughest fight he could possibly get. Even at FW B.J. managed to find someone bigger them himself to face. His record would look much different if he fought some mid tier guys after his loss to Edgar.

But since he didn't sadly his legacy will take a hit. Fighters loose a certain aura once they start losing. Fedor / B.J. / Anderson .. or any other fighter you want to name will take some sort of hit regardless of fans saying other wise. Think of it this way .. what if Fedor retired before his loss to Bigfoot .. what if Anderson retired before his first loss after his long reign ? They both would be looked at in a higher light then they currently are. There is something special about getting out while on top that carries over into your legacy.

Either way B.J. has cemented his name in time by becoming a dual champion and while most don't give him credit for it .. he was the first to hold two UFC belts at the same time...

To casuals maybe.

Real fans recognize his greatness.

Fucking right buddeh......BJ doesn't get the credit he deserves probably because half the people on here haven't seen his best performances.

BJ was a fucking Prodigy! In his prime he was amazing to watch.

BJ was a featherweight fighting up to heavyweight lol.

These casuals will never understand.

Was Sylvia tall and awkward? Do the Diaz brothers talk trash? Does Tate have the best ass in sports? Did tank have a drinking problem?

Yes.

No lightweight champion has beaten his record of defenses, even to this day.

Wtf is a prime? Arbitrary moment where a fighter starts losing? BJ Penn is almost a 0.500 fighter... he's nowhere near great lol

Isn’t it crazy that if BJ retired after choking out Matt Hughes, he would be remembered as more of an epic legend than Royce Gracie. People would be talking about him forever. He lost that aura by fighting too long.

No BJ legacy got hurt because he never did reach his prime for all the accolades he has accomplished.

We all know he had more but he couldnt be bothered to work hard enough to achieve it.

and we all saw what happened when a part time fighter steps in the cage. it can get ugly.

And that's not to mention his accomplishments outside of the UFC.

How much greater do you want him to be ?

No.

Nothing wrong with continuing to challenge yourself. It doesn’t take away one’s achievements.
