Do you have enough retirement savings?

I think the plan is to sell up and move to some quiet place in Maine. I don't know. I wonder what the fuck I'd do there. Buy a rowboat and a hat. Be one of those assholes. Grow vegetables. Be all excited about fuckin marrows. Become a Scout guy and molest kids. I'd probably molest the ugly ones just to give em a little ego boost. Somethin they can be traumatised by but also brag about in their later years. You never hear the parents of ugly kids warnin em not to accept candy from strangers. That's got to hurt. They see all their friend's parents tellin their good lookin kids to be careful, then go home and nothin. So yeah, I guess I'll move to Maine and become a charitable pedo.

I put away 3 grand a month into various accounts, so I should catch up to trend by 40, I was way behind at 30, but mostly because my salary went up very rapidly between 27 and 30.
you have a spare 3 grand a month to throw into retirement? Must have one hell of a salary or live an extremely minimalist lifestyle.

I have a pension and several investment accounts. I should be good.

I got 2X my annual gross salary saved at 30, and I also have a pension from work. I think I am in decent shape for now, but retirement is at least 30 years away so there are a lot of variables.

Nearly half of all Americans will retire broke (less than 10k in retirement savings).

What you SHOULD have at a bare minimum:
  • By 30: Have the equivalent of your salary saved
  • By 40: Have three times your salary saved
  • By 50: Have six times your salary saved
  • By 60: Have eight times your salary saved
  • By 67: Have 10 times your salary saved
At 40, I have less than 3x salary in my retirement accounts because I barely contributed to them in my 20's. Huge mistake but I am trying to catch up by maxing out employer plan and a Roth IRA. But reaching 6x salary by 50 will be difficult without some sacrifices.

How are you guys faring?

I put 15% of my pay into my retirement. If you don't start putting a portion of your paycheck into retirement as soon as you get a job right out of college, you are fucking yourself right in the ass. You will live poor in your twilight years and die penniless.

that's what I keep saying, but a lot of replies ITT wanna ignore the advice and YOLO

I do pretty well, but this factors employer matching, so a good portion of it is from them.

I have nearly 2x salary put away and save about $2k/month in various retirement accounts now (25% of that is 401k company match, roughly). I just took a new job with a $40k pay increase, so that $2k/month will go up, mostly in my 401k contributions. Next year my wife's company matches $.50 per $1 invested all the way up to the max employee contribution level of $18,500, so we'll be throwing more into her accounts for sure. I also put about $3-$4k/year into my HSA, and invest that as well, so the hope is we'll have the necessary $250k for just medical expenses when we retire.

I'm on track to be fine. My T. Rowe Price confidence score is 88. Other measurement tools have me about the same. Once I get my student loans paid off we'll increase our savings even more.

Many of them have probably been taught to believe Socialism will save the day, but if that day ever comes we will all live poor and die penniless.

I’m 30, no retirement savings. I’ll probably be working till I die. I do plan to start a 401k but probably won’t make enough to contribute since I got laid off and won’t be able to get a good paying job again.

I'm 44 and on track to retire at 58. When I was younger I thought I wouldn't live to 25, then 40 but thankfully we have compulsory super contributions for dumbarses like me. Just have to pay off my mortgage in the next 14 years and then I can enjoy my retirement.

I think there is an argument for enjoying the majority of your life and when you are young enough to still physically be able to do things and not worry about being poor when you already have dementia and arthritis anyway. I hope I die before I have to worry about getting into the best nursing home or having the best sitter around.

You can still do that while planning for the most likely scenario of you not dying at 50.

Seriously a pretty dumbshit approach homes......you're gonna blink and wonder where all the time went .

Hahaha. No. I have a pretty baller car though.

I save about $6,000 a month. Have about 2.5M in 401k, roth, and other financial matters. Own 6 rental properties and 1 primary home. All paid for in full. Put about 12% into 401k with a 5% match. I'm well under 50 and could retire today if I wanted, but just work to have something to do. I suppose you could say I'm the average Sherdogger. Only bench about 250 though.

The problem is most Americans think they've got to have the newest shit. Everyone has to have a new car or truck, a super nice house, the newest smart phone every-time it comes out etc... Don't get me started on these poor as people having multiple kids....

I have about 500k in my 401k from when I was a mod here.

I saw an article yesterday saying a 30 something yo retired with 1.3 mil portfolio and now has 1.7 mil.
