Melissa Harris Perry recently said in an ad,
"We have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to their communities."

Do you agree or disagree with Ms Perry?
I'm kind of reminded of the old Bastiat quote, "Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society." Or even the Rothbard quip, "The great non sequitur committed by defenders of the State ... is to leap from the necessity of society to the necessity of the State."
i think she means if your kids do well/do poorly it impacts the community (society) as a whole; which means people should protect/love/support kids because in a sense they are and you will one way or another reap the benefits or the punishment of their actions or inactions.
i.e. this kid in ur neighborhood is a bad kid, troublemaker; you figure its not ur prob, this same kid years later knocks up ur kid or gets knocked up by your kid and gets ur kid off track as a result of their interaction w/them or relationship w/them. So it would be a benefit to look at those kids as part of ur family, because they very well could impact the direction of yours.
