We are talking about the final round of fight right? Not Machida/Thiago Silva?
Tim knew the bell would ring any second so he just let's say gave up
Chuck Lidell v Jeremy Horn
Then a striker punching another fight at the end of a round should get extended time, he may get a KO attempt to end the fight.
It would have fallen differently and more abrupt if he went out. And he wouldnt have corrected his right knee. He was positioning himself to take less pressure. Thats why he braced his knee and hip.
I didn't follow MMA in 1999, but commentators said the fight was going to go into overtime but the referee decided to stop it cause Liddel was unconsious. Isn't that the same as stopping the fight between rounds and not after a fight has finished?
Any other more modern examples (with same rules/rounds as today)?
so the ref or ufc screwed Hiro?
You can see Hiro has that choke in tight just before he jumps into mount. 3 seconds is plenty of time to put someone asleep if the pressure/angles right. Your opinion is a very realistic outcome however but that gif really looks like he went out imo.
It's not realistic to someone that has the been trained. If you go grab an average person that has zero conditioning or the subtleties of defense down, yeah, it is. For a fighter, especially a wrestler; it's not.
