They choose Francis to knock guys out on the way to earning a title shot?

On the way is the key there. The road to the title is important. It builds a fighters skill and experience as well as his marketability.

Stipe was too big a jump in competition. Francis has never even had a fight scheduled for 5 rounds, but they are so desperate to find a million ppv star, they through him in there with an all time great in his prime before he had built himself to the challenge. Before he has ever had to overcome any adversity at all in a fight.

You could see he was not ready for it even as he walked out.

who is a jump in competition from overeem?

gsp wasn't ready for matt hughes, but rebounded fine. sometimes guys put themselves in position and we get to see if they're ready. jon jones beat the janitor and bader to get his title shot against an atg. brock was in his 4th fight. frank mir beat wes sims for his title shot in his 9th fight. tj beat mike easton in his 11th fight coming off a loss and then destroyed an atg for the title. there are so many examples of guys earning the shot, and then we see how prepared they are. the idea that you saw in his walkout whether he was ready is ridiculous.

He has the same face every time a big fight turns out to be a stinker. That fight should have been huge for the UFC HW division with either Stipe coming off as a beast or a new HW champ but you ended up with like 14 minutes of one guy with his forearm on the back of the other guys neck. That set Stipe back.
Any other fight the ref would have stood them up way earlier

Overeem is an accomplished name, but could you name a bettter matchup for Francis. Huge name with a very suspect chin. Still amazed Overeem didn’t run like he has in most of his fights since joining Jackson/Wink.

All your examples don’t really apply to what they did with Francis. Jon was a replacement. Also not sure how valuable an example is a guy that is take away the drugs/alcohol and dick pills would be the most gifted fighter to date. GSP is in fact the most gifted fighter to date. TJ had a little help from USADA. He had also been tested and lost and overcome whereas Francis had not.

While Francis is a specimen to behold, 5 rounds proved this past weekend that He was not ready. Not only did he lack the skill, but his conditioning was abysmal. He did not get caught and knocked out, or submitted. He couldn’t defend a takedown, and he was too gassed to do anything other than get taken down and pummeled.

I guess his chin was ready. <Fedor23>
