Damien maia is a true warrior

"True warrior"... that's just great.

He can't pay the mortgage with "true warrior".

Not only that, he's also one of the most respectful and likeable guys that has ever set a foot in a UFC octagon. And he's one of the few pure ground fighters that are absolutely exciting to watch, even for someone like me who generally prefers the stand-up fights.

Great to hear a fan of stand up fights appreciate Maia. I met Demian once and he was really cool and gracious to everyone.

Seems some people here have a short memory and don’t remember he’s given us some of the most exciting submissions in UFC history.

As a Maia fan I laughed my ass off reading this.

Maia is a stud. He's been criticized for two stinker title fights, but you forget it takes two to tango. Forever a fan.

It's a dangerous matchup for anyone, although Woodley basically made the blueprint on how to beat him (high level TDD + outbox him as he gasses and gets increasingly desperate for TD), Colby copied his strategy to win, so it stands to reason Usman will try the same thing, but maybe Maia will have some tricks up his sleeve this time.

Absolutely. The guy has more finishes than decisions and yet some people claim he's the epitome of a snooze fighter. He made ground specialists like Fitch and Nelson look like white belts and I still can't get over how such a nice guy like Maia was the one to dish out the nastiest submission victory I've ever seen against Rick Story. Watching that was harder than any one punch KO ever, pure brutality. The only thing I could hold against him is that this tenacity and creativity he usually has to get people under control and choke them out seems to completely disappear once he's in a title fight.

No he's not. He ducks every fighter. That's why he flops to ground to avoid fighting.

Hope Usman manages to send him away like Machida did Vitor. Came down from 185 to hug 170ers. Get up, get up! Stand up or I'm taking a point.
Who did he duck? Go duck yourself retard

Anytime a failed TD turned into a cowering roll onto back, hoping the ref would change the rules just for him and make the one trying to fight crawl into Maia's submissive receiving position

lol bjj

How does Maia beat Usman?

I have no idea, but I hope somehow he gets it done.

I’m still sour about how he got played on his title shot. He earned it 1-2 fights before he got it and when they did finally gave it to him, it was under the circumstances of a quick turnaround and a short camp. He deserved better than that and not just because he’s freakin 40 years old but because he is a true warrior.

I hope Maia can get the submission but Usman is about to copycat Covington game plan

Nothing but respect for Maia. Actually fought his way through the top 10 to earn his title shot the old fashioned way.

  • Allow take down
  • Pull guard
  • Control posture so face does not receive punches
  • Sweep opponent
  • Establish full mount
  • Punch face until opponent gives back
  • Take control of given back with body triangle
  • RnC opponent till tap or black out
  • Collect pay cheque
