The WBC Flyweight title reign of Daigo Higa (15-0, 15) [比嘉 大吾] has come to an end, before he has even stepped in the ring with Nicaraguan Cristofer Rosales (26-3, 17), as the talented Japanese fighter failed to make the 112lb weight limit at today's weigh in.

Higa had looked out of sorts all week at the various press events with his team clearly worried about their fighter and the toll making weight was taking on him. At today's original weigh in he was 114lbs, well above the limit. He was given a two hour grace period and was unable to lose the weight.

As a result Higa has been stripped of the title, and is yet another in a growing line of fighters to fail to make weight in Japan, which also include Juan Hernandez whom Higa beat for this title last year, the controversial Nery and a string of domestic fighters.

Yoko Gushiken, Higa's mentor, apologised on behalf of his fighter and stated that Higa did try but was unable to sweat the weight out. Those in Japan have been unsure as to why Higa has failed to make weight, but the main reasons given were that he has naturally grown, an issue with young fighters, or that the two between this bout and his last one was simply not enough to recover and burn off the weight again.

Rosales on the other hand did make weight, coming in around 111.3lbs and look very, very strong on the scales and like a man who really means business here.

At the moment the fight is still on. Higa will however need to be under 122lbs at a weigh in tomorrow. If he's under that the bout is likely to take place, if he's over that the contest will be cancelled. It's also worth noting that if Higa makes weight there is still a chance he will not be medically cleared for the fight. So there is a real risk of the contest being cancelled given how Higa has looked in the last few days.

Time to move to Superfly

Go after Srisaket or Yafai

damn that's unfortunate, I was hoping he could unify with Dalakian too. He should go up to 115 then, he's been meaning too for a while apparently, and competition is stacked, including Nietes.

I guess this means Rosales can fight Andrew "protected" Selby for the title.

Yeah time to move up. 115 has the bigger names anyway.
