Since Hague’s death, some have questioned whether the Edmonton Sports Combative Commission – who oversaw Hague and Braidwood’s fight – made crucial errors in sanctioning the contest. Veteran MMA journalist Mike Russell investigated the incident and on July 14th he released his findings in the article Is Edmonton Combative Sports Commission executive director Pat Reid criminally responsible for Tim Hague’s Death? (via RealFightStories.com).

CTV News Edmonton picked up on Russell’s story and interviewed him a week later. Their news piece on Hague’s death, featuring Russell can be seen in the link.

This is unfortunately going to be inevitable in high-contact sports like MMA, and it'll be a shitstorm of epic proportions when the first death happens in the UFC.

I wonder what provisions they've set up to minimize the ensuing media assault, but I'm positive this is already on the radar (hence why they got rid of "Knockout of the Night" and replaced it with "Performance of the Night" for PR reasons).

What are the details of this case, can someone give a quick summary?

Hague took a boxing fight against a Pro and was raped ..and eventually died after injuries sustained in the ring

there is a video of it it's a 100% mismatch..

But here's the thing, in boxing fighters routinely take squash matches with bums with like 3-23 records. Jeff Horn who's defending his belt against some bum Gary Corcoran, the latter has wins over two guys who are 12-104 and 13-120. Those were just the most ridiculous ones, Corocoran's had dozen other fights with bums.

Tim Hague was supposed to be one of these bums. Sadly it ended up in someone's death.

So its very hard to call it a mismatch, when its routine. Look at the records of 90% of boxers, everyone's faced some of these bums.

I don't disagree with you but in boxing the bums and their corners usually know the score so they go down when hit and the corners stop the fight before any serious damage is done

In This fight Hague would not stay down and his corner did not stop it in time..

Good point, but can we really blame the commissioner here? I don't think so, not over a corner not retiring. That's their fault. And i haven't seen the fight, but is the referee culpable?

There was a boxing match a few years ago with Magomed Abdusalamov vs Mike Perez. It went to a decision, although it could have easily been a stoppage or corner-retirement. Nonetheless, its what happened AFTER is the issue.

Abdusalamov was shown to the official doctor who looked at him and said he was fine. He was NOT fine, they were 'supposed' to put him in an ambulance and send him to the hospital. Instead, his corner had to find a cab on their own and take him there themselves, and he became a vegetable. Lost his ability to speak or walk or move his arms. That was in 2013, and they spent millions in rehab and taking care of him, partially funded by donations but mostly debt. Only this year, they got a $22 million dollar settlement from NYSAC. At first I thought it was fair, but when you consider they spent millions already and he has 3 young daughters, their future and his treatment will continue to cost millions.

Tim fought a lot and was KOed frequently in the year leading up to the fight where he was killed. Normally, this would bar him from being licensed. However, Edmonton is retarded in multiple ways. They think that a boxing KO is different than an MMA KO. They claimed that they couldn't have known Tim had been KOed so much, because his losses weren't in the official records. They also claimed that they didn't know he was suspended, because his suspension wasn't in fightrec. Problem is, his suspensions weren't there because Edmonton hadn't submitted them - he was on suspension, or should have been based on their regs, by the Edmonton AC. Another town's AC (Alberta has a different commission for each city - it's a clusterfuck) asked Pat if Hague was suspended or not at one point, noting that after KOs guy often get a few months off (which Tim should have gotten). Even when questioned on it, Reid said that nope, only 30 days, book him.

Booking the mismatch was the least of their sins. Yes, the ref should probably have stopped it sooner. Yes, Tim's corner should probably have thrown in the towel. But Tim shouldn't have been in a fight, period, but Edmonton let him fight something like 5 matches due to their incompetence in not suspending him or not documenting their suspensions when their regulations called for it. They've done it with other fighters too.

There's also a pile of shit about the head of the Edmonton AC being corrupt/incompetent/etc in the past - beyond what you'd normally expect. They delayed their investigation into Tim's death until after the UFC event was over. After Tim's death, they "suspended' Pat Reid, and had someone act in his place. Except they didn't actually suspend Reid, they just had another guy there looking important taking orders from Pat. Reid had also been charged with fraud when he lived in Ottawa. He didn't like people bringing that up.
