(CTE) Do You Guys Ever Worry About The Future Regarding...

Yes especially after a really brutal fight I get that same guilty feeling after watching porn.

...Your Favorite Fighters Health? I guess I'm sort of scared of the day where most if not all the fighters we loved watching perform and that inspired us have some sort of mental health repercussions from fighting.

I was watching the Gary Goodridge interview video in the other thread about cte in fighters and it made me very sad, but in a bittersweet way because Gary seems at peace with it and he knows it was worth it for the glory. I fear not all fighters will take it as well as he seems to be. I know it will be really hard when it becomes obvious in one of my favorite fighters.

This is all easy to avoid if you just watch the fights and don't get involved in the mma community beyond that, but I'm invested deeply with watching interviews and following most of the ufc fighters social media, as well as invested on a local level and knowing some personally.

Anyone else feel this way and have worries? Please inb4 "you're following the wrong sport if that worries you, ect" Part of what makes mma great is getting invested in the fighters and caring about their health to a certain degree.

I wouldn't say worry, but I wish them the best, but It's their chosen profession. They only have two choices, fight and risk their health or do something else. You make it seem like they don't know the risks going in. Guys like Sanchez, Brown, and others for example refuse to retire after taking huge beatings. That's on them and their family if they don't know when to get out.

No. It's a free country and they made their choice. Really you should only worry about yourself and family and stuff because if you worry about every little thing in the world you can do nothing about you'd be a mess.

"I want to feel bad, but I won't until a sad video on YouTube comes out showing the actual results. It also needs over a million hits and trend on the five major social media platforms for me to believe. Until that happens, I won't feel a thing." -The World

Yes, I want Thiago Alves, Deigo Sanchez and Rashad Evans to all retire. You wouldn't notice much of a difference from Sanchez these days but I still want to see these guys at least appear to be normal.

That's either coke, or how he reacts to something that excites him.

I guarantee if you ask his family, Chuck was doing that shit before he was getting hit in the head on a daily basis while watching sports.

No.

They're adults, they're responsible for themselves and they can do whatever they want with their bodies and brains.

what fight was dana watching there?

I do. I've been following CTE for quite a while now, and it's been the elephant in the room for a long time, imo. As research has evolved it's only gotten more and more scary. I believe in free choice, people should be able to do what they want, BUT not if CTE doesn't has them of sound mind, and if they don't have the full information about it.

After 18 you are supposed to be responsible for your decisions.
Do I feel for them having these problems? Yes.
Does UFC have to do something to protect them? No.

Diego Sanchez is already there, he slurs his words so much and is totally punch drunk these days, no one has a clue what he is even saying, impossible to understand him anymore. He has some sort of brain damage, without question in my mind. But they still let him fight, no one seems to care, he needs saving from himself.

There is a lot more to feel for than millionaire athletes. Slavery still exists - including USA with women slaves to pimps. hundreds of thousands die every day from war, maulnutrition, homeless, sex trafficking world wide, global warming which will probably kill us all or starve 90% of us out, yeah fighters not exactly on the top of my list.

Not at all.
I hope they all stay healthy, but that's not gonna happen.
They all know how they will probably end up and still choose to do it.
I hope for the best for athletes in all sports, but hey some of them do dangerous things with all the consequenses that go with their sport.

Chris Leben for sure CTE
Justin Gaethje for sure CTE
Mark Coleman just sounds like he’s punch drunk.

I worry about the future of all of us.

Amazon wants to start an insurance company.

Jeff Bezos is the man who puts ambulances at his fulfilment centers instead of not killing his employees. He is the man who is worth 100 billion dollars but 75% of his employees are on food stamps.

Aren't you worried?

It’s weird that this just came up. The other day I lost a good friend/one of my coaches due to cte. He had over 50 fights and had been knocked out a lot. The last two years he has said he just knows something isn’t right with him. He shot himself the other day but before that said he wanted to donate his brain to Boston university to do research for cte.

It’s a harsh reality. Guys need to know when to stop. He should’ve been done fighting way before he finally quit but didn’t want to. It got to the point where he couldn’t even coach anymore because he suffered from ptsd. If he saw one of his guys start getting beat up it would fuck him up way bad. Just such a sad story.

I could give two shits about what those people do with their lives. But I do think commissions should give more thought when sanctioning fighters like Overeem, Arlovski and Belfort at this point.

How do you feel about the well being of actual veterans?

I just got done watching the 30 for 30: Muhammad and Larrry where they show Ali at 38 two years after the 2nd Leon Spinks where he was coming back to fight Larry Holmes for the HW title. Ali was already showing signs that something was wrong but everyone over looked it because of who he was. That got me thinking of some of the "older" fighters that are still fighting and even guys like Matt Brown and Mark Hunt who have brought up CTE or other issues yet are allowed to fight. Then there are guys like Bovy Sor Udomson and Pornsanae Sitmonchai in Muay Thai and Kickboxing it's not something I like to think about. It kinda pisses me off like with Pornsanae he was pretty done fighting was a trainer at Evolve MMA something happens and then he is booked in a fight in Japan and get knocked out again.
