Could UFC reset titles every year like pro sports

Best idea ever.

Not even joking.

Tournaments each year, whoever wins will truly be the champ.

Some might have a more or less difficult bracket but this is as close as it gets to perfect.

If someone drops out, fuckit, better luck next year.

They can do undercards with the losers cause they deserve money as well cause they got families n shit.

Also, no protecting the champ. Can't pick and choose fights.

If someone wins twice in a row then he becomes an instant legend.

How about pulling belts for fighters who don't defend?

Just get rid of belts altogether. They don't mean shit anymore anyway.

Right now the UFC has 12 weight classes, so they could have a Grand Prix in each weight class every 4 years, alternating so there would be 3 weight class GP’s per year. Top 8 (7 if champions are given byes) ranked fighters would only have to fight 3 times that year. Opening rounds on Super Bowl weekend, Semis during International Fight Week in July and the finals around New Years.

its too lucrative for them to build "stars" that kids idolize and throw their money at. They are not a legit sports org, all business.

and use the ranking system for seeding brackets only?
If they were retarded, and wanted to the do the opposite of every combat sport since the beginning of time, yes, they could.

raw

We really do get some stupid ideas on this site

Just change the UFC to a World Cup football (soccer) format where you win the tournament and are World Champion for 4 years but have to enter a qualifying tournament 2 years later to see if you can make it to the main tournament held every 4 years to defend your title.

It's just as stupid as the TS's suggestion so why not.

Tournaments in MMA don't work as you always have people pulling out through injury or because they've left to join another organisation so it ends up with DC winning a tournament he was even in at the start (yes I know he was an alternate but look at the original poster for the tournament, he's not there and he wasn't in any of the initial media publicity).

Oddly I find your idea interesting, bizarre, but it does actually sound like it could be fun. Maybe get around the constant injuries and overtraining by having shorter fights? 1 x 5 minute round?
Every division should hold an 8-man bracket for that years title. Fight once every 3-4 months. Running concurrently you have people outside the bracket fighting for a place in the next years bracket and/or to fill in as an alternate. Top 3 or 4 finishers get automatically seeded into next year while the bottom 5 or 4 get relegated to qualification/alternate status.

This way you have no ducking contenders or cherry picking opponents. If you don't like a champion, you reset the next year.

In fight sport it doesn't work that way. Everyone would be considered paper champs.
