Conor McGregor ‘100 percent’ considers himself the UFC featherweight champion

He didn't have to give up one when he chose to rematch Nate instead of defend. Again, if he only defended his belt then neither him, nor you, would be jumping to his defense because you wouldn't need to.

Why the hell would he have to give up his belt for the Nate rematch. He had to give it up because he had two. Both belts. He had to give up one. They wouldn't let him keep both. You shouldn't be a hater all your life. And I'm not really defending him. What you said was just dumb as fuck.

I dont think any reasonable person would argue that he WAS the FW champ. He KO'd aldo and won the belt. But arguing he's STILL the FW champ is absurd.

Do you watch sports? In boxing, if you don't defend your belt against the next guy up, you're stripped. In baseball if you win the world series and sit out the next season, you're not still the champ when the next team wins the world series. in every sport there is, you have to defend your title to remain the current champ. Otherwise, you're the champ of X year. Conor is the 2015 FW champ. end of it.
The question posed was "are you truly champion if you never defend?"

The answer is clearly yes. You become champion when you win the belt. Until you are defeated or stripped you are the champion.

Conor is clearly no longer the FW champion. He has been stripped for not defending the belt. However, that doesn't change the fact that until he was stripped he was the champion.

People get hung up on an old matt hughes saying "you're not the champion until you successfully defend the title." Thats ridiculous.

Rashad, Machida, Shogun, Forrest.....they were all champions the second they won the belt. The fact that they lost the belt quickly does not mean that they were never champion....It means they were champion, but lost the title due to defeat.

Mcgregor was stripped, not defeated for the title. This makes no difference in the fact that he was the FW champion. He just isn't any longer....

Im not arguing that he is still the UFC FW champion, just that he once was, which some people question due to the whole situation with him not defending the belt.....

People act like beating UFC champions is no big deal and earns no title or respect....

27 million irish americans for a reason
Plastic paddies everywhere.....

Nope

Jon Jones can say that because he lost the belt due to some personal life issues

Conor on the other hand actively avoided defending it and got it stripped off him

Which means he eliminated the possibility of someone else taking it off him, which they would have

He's not the featherweight champ and he's the paper LW champ

He beat Eddie. If winning title fights doesnt make you champion, then maybe we should get rid of titles altogether....

Why not????????????

Most of his fans think he is God also.

you aint the champ until you defend the belt, boy

With a gifted a title shot. Another guy could have done the same

And if defending your title isnt necessary yes let's get rid of the titles

If anyone else had beaten Alvarez while Alvarez was champ, they would have become champion.....If you're referring to Aldo, McGregor earned that shot by the time they fought.....

For sure. He was the champ. He KO'd Aldo. My points were against him saying that he's "still the real champ", because he KO'd Aldo in 2015 and decisioned Max in 2013.
Interesting note, Matt Hughes famous quote was said AFTER he had defended the title ... sort of convenient ;)

Bolded: no argument there. Conor was the champ. He can also claim wins over both the former and current champs. But he left FW behind. He hasn't fought there in over a year and a half and seems to have no onclination to do so.

He cannot stay champ indefinitely, even if he fully cleaned out the division.
The victory over a prime Aldo is one thing, but a victory over Max in 2013 is meaningless. Joe Duffy beat conor in 2010, and that holds the same relevance as Conor's win over Max.

Conor makes a good point - he never lost the belt and likely never would have for many years.

There have only been 3 FW champs in UFC history - Conor, Aldo and Holloway. And they all fought each other.

Conor went 2-0, Max went 1-1, and Aldo went 0-2 with 2 brutal KO losses.

So you tell me who the man at FW is <45>

It's Aldo: most title defences, longest time on top, most wins as champion. <45>

I tend to agree with him. As much as I liked Cormier, I always saw Jon as the champ. Same thing here except maybe even moreso since Conor has continued fighting.

Of course he's still the champion of that division. He does need to defend that belt but I understand why he hasn't. Nobody in that division offers him much of a fight ATM.

He also can't make the weight anymore.

as much as I'm a fan of Conor, he gotta at least defend once first

The answer is NO.
NO, you can't call yourself champion if you have no interest in giving others the opportunity you got

Real champs defend their belts. Conor is a snake oil salesman who is the poor man's fan.
