The question posed was "are you truly champion if you never defend?"
The answer is clearly yes. You become champion when you win the belt. Until you are defeated or stripped you are the champion.
Conor is clearly no longer the FW champion. He has been stripped for not defending the belt. However, that doesn't change the fact that until he was stripped he was the champion.
People get hung up on an old matt hughes saying "you're not the champion until you successfully defend the title." Thats ridiculous.
Rashad, Machida, Shogun, Forrest.....they were all champions the second they won the belt. The fact that they lost the belt quickly does not mean that they were never champion....It means they were champion, but lost the title due to defeat.
Mcgregor was stripped, not defeated for the title. This makes no difference in the fact that he was the FW champion. He just isn't any longer....
Im not arguing that he is still the UFC FW champion, just that he once was, which some people question due to the whole situation with him not defending the belt.....
People act like beating UFC champions is no big deal and earns no title or respect....
