I'm a big fan of this concept. But they need to allow closed fist and elbows to make it real.

These open palm strikes aren't really realistic. Also, the positional starts are nonsensical.

The problem with this is then it becomes mma. We all train marital arts in the hope that in a shit hit the fan scenario in the streets we can use it and save our butts, but realistically it's hard to replicate that in the gym no matter how we try to measure it and to do it safely.

No, it's not MMA because there's no stand up striking game involved. Basically, combat BJJ is to sharpen BJJ players ground game for a real fight/mma fight.

They need to add upkicks and slams. The Ground aspect needs to be as close to a real fight as possible.

This tournament could be a factory for producing Maia and Khabib like fighters.

Needs open hand strikes in the stand up as well.

Then that's just pankration. They need punches, elbows, upkicks and slams whilst on the ground.

This format should be a breeding ground for creating BJJ guys like Demian Maia with the ground and pound of guys like Luke Rockhold.

how often you gunna have a street fight with another trained grappler where only slaps on the ground occur ?

Can you slap them as hard as you can??? I basically bitch slapped a dude for 5 minutes straight and he looked like a dude who just got the fuck beat out of him. I am talking black eye and puffy face. But it was seriously winding up and bitch slapping a motherfucker for 5 minutes....no mercy.

What's your point though? Do you prefer fist and elbows instead of slaps/open palm strike?

Me personally, I don't care about combat jiu jitsu either way. I just made the comment originally that allowing fist and elbows strikes only when your on the ground is really no different than MMA minus the stand-up striking aspect. So why not just do MMA then?

Because you want to be a BJJ specialist in MMA. It's a stepping stone to MMA. If you just do MMA, then you're never going to develop the technical proficiency of a Demian Maia. I think of Demian did only combat jiu jitsu his whole life, he would have been more effective or his success would have been fast tracked in MMA.

Khabib would never be the fighter he is if he just started with MMA.
