Michael Cohen pleads guilty, says he lied about Trump's knowledge of Moscow project

President Donald Trump spoke more extensively during the presidential election with his-then attorney Michael Cohen about the proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow than Cohen admitted to Congress last year, Cohen said while pleading guilty Thursday in federal court to a charge from special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

Cohen, who previously said talks about the Moscow project had ended in January 2016, just prior to the Iowa caucuses, said he had lied out of a sense of obligation to Trump.

"I made these statements to be consistent with Individual-1's political messaging and out of loyalty to Individual-1," Cohen said. Individual-1 was identified in court filings as Trump, and Cohen identified him as such in a New York courtroom Thursday.
Cohen, who famously once declared he would "take a bullet" for Trump, is cooperating with Mueller and has spoken with the special counsel's office for more than 70 hours on topics beyond Moscow, a source with knowledge of the discussions told CNN.
He pleaded guilty earlier this year to eight counts in a separate case from the Manhattan US attorney's office. Cohen did not have an agreement to cooperate with prosecutors on that case.
Thursday's revelations are potentially significant because they appear to show that Trump was engaged in business dealings with Russia in the midst of a campaign in which Moscow interfered to help elect him.
They could also intersect with other information that Mueller knows to create political and legal jeopardy for the President.

Trump responded to Cohen's admission at the White House on Thursday, calling his former lawyer "very weak."
"He's a weak person," Trump said before departing for Buenos Aires, Argentina.
"He was convicted with a fairly long-term sentence with things unrelated to the Trump Organization," Trump said. "What he's trying to do is get a reduced sentence."
In fact, Cohen hasn't been sentenced in either case, and the charges to which he pleaded guilty in August included information about his reimbursement by the Trump Organization for payments he made or helped orchestrate to conceal allegations from two women about sexual encounters with Trump before he ran for office. Trump has denied those claims.

Three Remarkable Things About Michael Cohen's Plea
These developments would, under normal circumstances, end a presidency.

Michael Cohen’s decision to plead guilty to lying to Congress on Thursday was remarkable for three reasons.

The first was that Cohen walked into a Manhattan federal courtroom unannounced. He did it by surprise. We live in a political environment characterized by constant leaks, each choreographed more carefully than a public announcement. The drama of learning what’s going to happen at an event, rather than before the event, has mostly disappeared. But Cohen’s plea, a momentous development in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, happened with no warning. That reflects admirable discipline in Mueller’s office.

The second remarkable thing was that the plea happened at all. Cohen already pleaded guilty in August to eight federal felonies, including tax fraud, bank fraud, and campaign-finance violations. That plea already ended his career and exposed him to at least several years in federal prison. By contrast, Cohen’s new plea is to a lone count of lying to Congress in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001 —a weapon Mueller has wielded ruthlessly against President Donald Trump’s followers, including Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos, Rick Gates, and Paul Manafort. The conviction won’t increase Cohen’s sentence, and the additional felony count won’t have any perceptible impact on his life. If anything, by adding a cooperation term to his plea agreement, this new plea gives him an opportunity to reduce his sentence.

The third remarkable thing about Cohen’s plea was its substance. The president of the United States’ personal lawyer admitted to lying to Congress about the president’s business activities with a hostile foreign power, in order to support the president’s story. In any rational era, that would be earthshaking. Now it’s barely a blip. Over the past two years, we’ve become accustomed to headlines like “President’s Campaign Manager Convicted of Fraud” and “President’s Personal Lawyer Paid for Adult Actress’s Silence.” We’re numb to it all. But these are the sorts of developments that would, under normal circumstances, end a presidency.

They still might. Cohen admitted that he lied to Congress to support President Trump’s version of events. He notably did not claim that he did so at Trump’s request, or that Trump knew he would do it. But if Cohen’s telling the truth this time, then this conclusion, at least, is inescapable: The president, who has followed this drama obsessively, knew that his personal lawyer was lying to Congress about his business activities, and stood by while it happened.

Deutsche Bank offices raided in connection with Panama Papers
Police in Germany have raided the offices of Deutsche Bank in connection with the Panama Papers revelations and as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering.

About 170 police officers, prosecutors and tax inspectors searched six Deutsche Bank offices in and around Frankfurt, the public prosecutor’s office said. Investigators are looking into the activities of two Deutsche Bankemployees who allegedly helped clients to set up offshore companies to launder money, it added.

The Panama Papers, published by the Guardian and a consortium of international journalists in April 2016, revealed how offshore tax havens including the British Virgin Islands were used to hide billions of dollars.

The prosecutor’s office said it had seized written and electronic business documents. Police cars were parked outside the headquarters of the bank, Germany’s biggest lender.

In a statement Deutsche Bank said it would “cooperate closely with prosecutors”, adding that it was “anxious to clarify all suspicions”. The bank said it believed it had previously handed over to the authorities all relevant information in the Panama Papers case.

Records from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca were the basis of the Panama Papers investigation and included more than 10m documents. The revelations caused protests in several countries and led to the resignation of heads of state, including in Iceland and Pakistan.

Deutsche Bank’s Geneva branch held accounts for two offshore companies belonging to the family of Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The firms owned four luxury flats in Mayfair, which were at the centre of corruption charges against the Sharifs. In July Pakistan’s anti-graft court sentenced Sharif to 10 years in jail, and his daughter Maryam to seven years. The Sharif family denies wrongdoing and maintains that a Qatari prince gifted the property to Nawaz’s children to repay an old debt. In September Nawaz and Maryam were released pending an appeal.

Anti-corruption groups welcomed the raid in Frankfurt and said it was a “nail in the coffin of the opaque offshore world”.

“Almost three years on, and law enforcement are still relying on the Panama Papers for their work. It shows how investigative journalism has been at the forefront of opening the door on a morass of morally dubious – and sometimes illegal – activity by banks,” Ava Lee, a campaigner at Global Witness, said.

Trump has borrowed 360 million from them in the last decade while USA banks wouldn't lend him a dime.

Lol I'm not a Trump fan. It was just a standard response for any new shit surfacing about Trump and people getting their hopes up. I would much rather have Pence as the president but Trump seems to be teflon.
Cool. Please don't shitpost. I don't care for it: sincerely or ironically.

One of the more notable things that came up today is that Russia knew all along when Trump was lying during the campaign in denying financial or other dealings with Moscow. This is the seeds of blackmail. Everyone now has to wonder what was said during that private meeting w/Putin in Helsinki, as Trump walked out with his tail between his legs.

Don't worry everyone, this wasn't a witch hunt. Mueller and co will subpoena every business associate, lawyer of Trump's etc. Not a witch hunt. They went in with good faith to uncover every stone for the good of the democratic republic.

This is surely the purpose of Mueller's position. To ensnare the POTUS and play him like a fiddle. Come on now.
The purpose of this position is to find the truth, if you don't lie, you don't get charged.

The enormous lie Trump told about not having NOTHING to do with Russia financially or other is going to roast his lying ass.

You should probably research it, since Fox isn't showing any of it.

Then you can "lol", and be shocked.

This is about a third of the way down Fox's front page. They've been covering it all day. Just not with CNN's flare for being fake news.

Look over the videos for the last 24 hours on their youtube channel - there are at least 10 pieces on it, or related to it:

They barely covered it....Gregg Jarret. hahah...are you fucking kidding? And you call CNN fake news, get a grip. I suppose it won't be settled till Jenine Pirro gives her word. You Fox people are nuts.

Trump even offered Putin a 50 million dollar penthouse in the new building if it went through, all during the election.

Every, and I mean every Trump affiliate lied about connections, donations or talks with Russia/Russians. Why?
