Classism in Liberal News Comedy

Thanks for that essay.

Great read.

You may like reading some books by Christopher Lasch. His most popular book is titled The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations (1979). My personal favorite is the book he finished just before he died which is titled: The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy (1996).

I quite enjoy it. He looks like a hedgehog, sounds like sylvester the cat ,cusses like a sailor and has a mind of a genius. What not to like ( even if I disagree with a lot of what he says)

Zizek is not a genius. He is very clever in that he is able to stretch a 10 page book of unoriginal ideas into 200 pages using Lacanian, Hegelian and Marxist jargon and do the same thing book after book and gain attention through his disgusting slob gimmick.

Do you purposely attempt to derail every thread you post in or is something you can't control , like a form of Tourettes?

He said, while making three consecutive OT posts...

He's tackling a subject, so brain dead obvious, with some nuance and paragraphs, so it's all of sudden "intellectual"?

LOL. Sorry, no. He's simply behind the curve. Like most Liberals.

LOL at you laughing at anyone. You quit and run for the hills whenever you are challenged. Still waiting for you to respond to my post about how Obama "supported Islam" but McMaster didn't.

"Elitist" Jon Stewart on New York pizza vs. Chicago pizza:

"deep dish pizza isn't pizza, it's a casserole!"
"it isn't pizza, it's tomato soup in a bread bowl."

Fast good is disgusting and Mountain Dew is radioactive garbage. Not really smug to have that opinion and share it.

I mean I see where you’re coming from but with guys like Oliver and Mahr it seems clear to me their condescending nature is based on them being comedians and not their party. Conservative comedians are judgmental of the other half’s life style too. If you’re a comedian and you’re not smug or judgmental you’re probably not good.

Here is Chris Hedges tearing idiots like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert a new asshole:

Your description of that video that he was "tearing Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert a new asshole" is amazing hyperbole, and misrepresents his arguments.o_O

He said "he isn't a fan" because they don't go after the system (the corporate state) itself, instead going after and laughing at bizarre and idiotic figures like Newt Gingrich.

You elected a reality tv personality as president you realize

Canadians are not in a position to brag. They elected a clown prince for Prime Minister whose only qualification was being the spoiled-brat, trust-fund child of a former cuckold PM.

Parliamentary democracy is a little different , you vote for a local representative who then selects a leader ( who they can remove at any time) but point taken

Well, not genius on a savant type of genius, but, aside of some exhausting repetitions in different books, sometimes Zizek comes with some serious thought provoking stuff. And he is surprisingly one of the few intellectuals in our times who actually understands the issues he talks about (like, surprisingly, theology) and give them the proper credit before rejecting the common solutions.
And he is entertaining as heck, his call on Chomsky inconsistency was at least extremely enjoyable to watch.
And the funny thing is that, because of his approach on things, and critique of PC culture and the progressive left, he is being accused of being a nazi.
His opinion on the refugee crisis is actually pretty good.

And I am far from being a left winger, but I must give him credit, he is a left winger, but no brainless idiotic virtue signaling leftie.
Curious note: Decades ago, when i was in college, the old school Marxists HATED the Frankfurt school lined students. Their main accusation was that they where watered down and that they were idealistic Marxists ignoring the philosophical assumptions of Marxism.
As crazy as the Marxists were, there was still some honesty in their claims, now the Frankfurt guys, they sounded like nice too-good assholes who coudln't give a direct answer on what they really wanted to acomplish

Liberals are elitist in nature. The whole platform is about telling you what you can and can't do and then taking money and dispursing it for you.

You do realize that liberalism was definitionally founded as an alternative to the conservative monarchy, right?

Other than your post just being moronic partisan shit posting in general, it's particularly stupid given that modern conservatism both (a) also operates by taxation and redistribution, as any form of governance must, and (b) has been MUCH more infringing on citizens' liberties.

0/10. Please don't vote.

Zizek is very smart. Genius is relative, but his intelligence and innovation are undeniable. I don't think he's an intellectual giant, but he's okay.

Meanwhile, @Devout Pessimist apparently thinks Thomas Sowell is a genius, which is about as LOL-worthy as anything given that Thomas Sowell is an aimless and incoherent partisan dolt: basically the HereticBD of would-be intellectuals.

Oliver is mostly annoying with all his screaming, but he does bring some very valid problems to light once in a while..
Colbert doesn´t have much relevance outside of comedy. That Byrne performance the other night was fucking amazing though.

I kind of agree with your end result but I believe there is a lot less strategy in what people do.

You say these were created to counter balance the right wingers, personally I think they were created simply to make money.

I think this is one of those things that gets attributed to Liberals and Conservatives when it's really an urban vs rural issue. There's lots of overlap, though.

You're talking to a guy who thinks a coalition with socialists is more optimal than a coalition with the more classical liberals of the west.

He's an agent....

Ok but don't you think as soon as Conan brought his sword behind himself like that, he would be done in by anyone with a blue belt or more in teh hack 'n slash?

The worst thing is they need a crowd to applaud everything they say. Good thread.

Hitchens: Your audience is frivolous.

Love that. I have zero respect for people who need a crowd to be powerful.

"If you have an audience and you are not going against something bigger, more powerful than yourself - you are a bullsh*t vendor." -@nntaleb

i used to watch Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert every day and im a right wing wacko. I feel its got to a point where both sides are 1 uping each other when in reality we like guns, dont care if gay people get married, etc. Most of the country is in the center but we are told to hate everything that is not along our party lines. Let the mexicans stay. For example. If mexicans are taking your jobs you should probably work harder.

True, just like all those fancy Tae Kwon Do spin kicks, never turn your back on an opponent. Unless is a well timed spinning side kick or spinning hook, sometimes they're safe.
