Classism in Liberal News Comedy

Apparently liberals can't walk a mile in conservative shoes.

@Jack V Savage This is your most respectable right of center person. Thank goodness we have this voice of reason!

I agree with your analysis @Trotsky, accept for you referring to John Oliver as policy informed. He's a smug idiot who consistently mischaracterizes issues and gives half truths in order to appease his viewers.

Late night shows use to be mostly entertainment and a touch of polticis, now their shows are a leftist circle jerk. Sephen Colbert scolded HIS OWN CROWD for laughing at a Trump related comment. Jimmy Fallon is the best entertainer out of all of them and his ratings are slipping because he's not playing ball with the political agenda of bashing Trump all throughout his show. So this tells me that a larger portion of the left is lapping it up rather than becoming marginalized.

This is a topic that has been bugging me recently and that I think could actually stoke some productive input from right wingers here that might otherwise be disposed towards more vapid criticism of liberals.

In the 2000s, liberal news comedy took hold to counterbalance the outrage propaganda model of Fox News. With men like Jon Stewart at the helm, it was supposed to make the center/center-left message more accessible to citizens who weren't captivated by the then-very dry CNN and MSNBC. However, with guys like Bill Maher, John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert, the latter two of which are very knowledgeable and policy-competent figureheads, the message has become increasingly (and more apparently) classist, most notably towards lower class and rural white citizens.

With passing jokes about how fast food tastes is disgusting (Stewart/Colbert), to Mountain Dew being radioactive waste (Oliver), to big chain retail stores being a cesspool for oddities (Maher), the liberal comedy news seems to more and more casually engage in, and saturate their message with, distinctly condescending and elitist commentary.

This, along with the effects of right populism, has helped strengthen the perception that the center-left, which by all policy bases much better represents the poor and advocates for their interests, is in fact the elitist network that actually forms the right-wing policy platform. Thus, instead of making the Democrats more palatable to the people they help and making their pragmatism more accessible, the exact opposite effect is seeming occur.

What do you think?
Yeah, I'm more left leaning but I really hate it when upper middle class/rich liberals make fun of poor people and poor people's supposed habits.

Making fun of right wingers is alright, but why do they often bring up the fact they're poor and rural? Why do we have to vilify them so much instead of reaching out and hearing their complaints etc?

Liberals are elitist in nature. The whole platform is about telling you what you can and can't do and then taking money and dispursing it for you.
Right wingers have an elitist problem as well, you realize that?

I thought his segments on football stadiums and multilevel marketing were informative.

He relies heavily on theatrics to deliver his punchlines instead of substance. That's my opinion. I can't deny what you're attributing tohim I'm not familiar with those subjects.

Yeah, I don't mind him but I can see how he can come over as smug and unfunny.

Wait. Are you saying that Liberals are condescending, elitist, smug cocksuckers, who nobody likes?

Where am I in time? Is this the moment before people cast their vote for Donald Trump?

Profound thread. Way to catch up, @Trotsky. Hopefully other Liberals can get "woke" to this reality. People simply don't like the smug cuntishness of Liberals. Whoa! Who'd of thunk it?

I think both parties are doing their damndest to be a be a bunch of smug elitist cocksuckers nobody likes

I have no idea why they do it. Neither did Chomsky circa 2009.

The American left, but I suppose the Canadian left too took their eye off the ball while the right has ramped up their efforts to convince working class voters to, I would say, an unprecedented level enabled by social media.

I think this is actually a function of privilege induced blindness: class privilege to be precise. White liberals doing the brow beating are fairly well off and adapted to the changing economy. They don't seem to have the skin in the game necessary to make the left counter argument to what the right is putting down. Hillary lost because the midwest collapsed, and only just. Did she even do any speaking tours in Ohio or Wisconsin? That they might have the better argument for the working class doesn't really matter if the way it's argued is ''if this doesn't make sense, you're a retard.''

If you put that up against a guy who says he's going to make America great again, he's going to bring back your long lost coal mine job, he's going to protect you from everything that right wing social media is saying you should be afraid of, absent a powerful counterargument you can't really blame people for throwing the die on obergruppenfuhrer cheeto.

Yes I do, which is why I'm stuck in the middle

Great video, thanks.

Also @Jack V Savage , and I know this is somewhat socialist to your ear, but I hope you heed it nonetheless, international coalitionism is about to be the new frontier. We've already seen it with Sanders/Corbyn supporters and now with the Western European/American right. Once Sanders is the next president, and sanctions are lifted and ties opened up again with Cuba and Venezuela-- I think, or rather hope, we'll see the flood gates open and a "coalition of reason" type deal in the Western Hemisphere between social democrats (Corbyn/Bernie), socialists (Cuba/Venezuela/Bolivia next) in combating these nationalist morons and opening up the development of (increasingly needed, with economic development) market socialism.

I have been drinking, so I hope that is somewhat intelligible. But i do think that ideological neoliberals will play a part in upending institutional neoliberalism, which has given way to this disgusting reactionary plague that you see here. So, in summation, let the foreigners speak, and the cream will hopefully rise to the top.

I came in to counter balance the dumb Canadian but did you just say Venezuela and coalition of reason? Yes you have been drinking.... :)

You're talking to a guy who thinks a coalition with socialists is more optimal than a coalition with the more classical liberals of the west.

He's an agent....

No surprise you sound happy to have some company in the smug condescending department. Good for you.

It's not that they are only smug and Arrogant , they are extremely dangerous in their stupidity.

Liberals are lgbq , antifa, blm, hollyweird, women marchers, illegals, and Muslims .

Run far far away,

Let them slowly crash and burn, soon they will start attacking themsleves

This is very interesting and not surprising. A lot of liberal feel only they can possibly be correct so they give zero thought to anyone else.

He made it, because he's an idiot, and a typical Liberal(larping as a communist), who has only now...NOW, come to this realization.

My question is, how stupid do you have to be, to recognize this stigma just now?
@Trotsky formula: google - read - type word salad - edit word salad to sound as "smart" as possible - post - call righty names.

Same ole shit

???

I'm affirmatively declining to pass judgments on this issue. You know how those individualized judgments can be propagated to insinuate unfair treatment (such that, say, it would then be leveraged against appreciating Rod's contributions) and just push the bar lower. This actually analogizes to a 1A jurisprudence conversation earlier --> when in doubt, more speech. Not less.

I don't think there's any individualized judgment. There's a clear distinction between a foreigner discussing U.S. policy or ideology and someone just rooting for a politician like a football team (with an element of deliberate trolling). That's the difference between Rod, who is pretty widely respected even though he makes some big mistakes, and Heretic, who is a joke.

Lame.

Did you ever answer @Starman's question BTW, or did you just duck out of that thread, like you always do when you're posed with a question you refuse to answer?

Huh? What question do you want to know the answer to? And I'm surprised that you would be willing to align with the guy who was busted pretending to be a professor who thinks that Nazis and Fascists are on the left.
