It seems kind of try-hard to me.

I have no problem with religion per-se, but all religions need a major overhaul in my opinion.

Before MMA a lot of people thought they knew how to defend themselves because they listened to charlatans (and some unwitting charlatans, who also thought they knew how to defend themselves).

MMA tested a lot of myths scientifically, something that religion could use more of in my opinion.

MMA is about skill. Testing yourself.
If you think it is about beating someone up for entertainment, maybe you shouldn't watch it.
