The can opener isn't even supposed to be a sub, it's just supposed to be used to open the guard, but since so many people are ignorant of neck cranks, way more people tap out to them than they should.

Although very easy to defend the can opener, you shouldn't do it without asking the main instructor if it's OK to do it. The same goes to leg attacks that are not allowed for lower ranked belts in most gyms.

There's definitely a culture in many schools that you're sort of a bitch if you tap to positions; not saying that's how it should be but it's definitely there. It sounds like the white belt was trying to tough it out thinking he was simply in a bad position and not realizing what was happening. I think it's not only good for, but incumbent upon, higher belts (which I'm sort of assuming you are here, Cochrane) to protect the beginners, AND ALSO guide the lower-mid level guys like blue belts (particularly the douches) to better attitudes on the mats and about their training partners. I'm actually kind of surprised at Petey's response here; I strongly dislike the idea of a gym where people sit around doing nothing while a blue belt is smashing a clueless beginner, and would be curious to hear more of an explanation why he feels you acted inappropriately.

It is always OK to intervene if you think someone is at risks.

It is not even an issue of belts etc...but just common sense

Regarding the can opener, it really on the rules of the gym.

In my club, strictly ibjjf rules with the higher belts rules apply.

For people that are saying that all ibjjf illegal rules should be taught and used during rolling, I wish you the best.

    Well there you go.

He didn't think he was supposed to be in a 'bad spot'.

Only reality can truly show otherwise.

That's pretty short-sighted and foolhardy. What if he didn't realize he was in a bad position in an omo plata and that arm is going, going.. Should he still not intervene because reality will show ?

He wasn't in an omoplata though, he was in a scarfhold.

Would it have been okay to intervene if it was an omo plata ?

It would have been more okay, of course, since chokes and breaks are two different things.

You can intervene if or when someone passes out; intervening when they get an limb detached, on the other hand, is a bit like slamming the barn door closed after the horses have already bolted.

I'm totally lost on how intervening in a roll in the gym for someone who's been training for a week is the wrong thing to do. Putting him to sleep benefits no one except potentially the douchebag's ego.

It's legit. Monson submitted Pe de Pano with a can opener.

Can opener is a great move for opening the closed guard. I spent 5 minutes inside my opponents closed guard yesterday at Finnish nationals, I wish I could have used the can opener there.

I never said it wasn't legit, I use it all the time, but its easy to defend and I only use it against high level grapplers to open their guard. I saw that monsoon pe de pano match years ago and I'm still not sure how he got him with that. The only thing I can figure is Pe de pano knew it was illegal and used it to get the DQ win.
