Law California Is Now Officially A Sanctuary State For All Illegal Immigrants

That it may be, but we resolved this at Fort Sumter for the better.

Not all fair either, States rights is one of the best things about America, but the dark stain of slavery put an artificial rhetorical ugly mark on what people might do with their rights.

Like own other people, or grow and sell opium within State lines, or legalize killing for sport.

The Commerce Clause interpretations often go too far, but, are better than the alternative even with the draconian and overbearing enforcement over our lives.

I don't disagree.

I do use double negatives.

as a life long californian and a cali cop, this sanctuary law is stupid.

this new law prevents me from notify federal authority when i arrest an undocumented criminal felon. now that felon is going back to the street.

how exactly is that a good thing for local community again?

American laws are baffling

I think it's a bad idea but given how aggressive the Fed has been in trying to target California for punitive legislation and regulation, I also completely support them giving the Fed the finger.

You can't shit on the states and then expect them to still help you with your responsibilities.

Wow this is a travesty but the damage has already been done... thanks Arnold

They let illegals drive here in California... We give them licenses... We might as well all stop paying taxes. That will be the only way they hear our voice.
They can literally flash their Mexican, Canadian, etc IDs, show were they live and get a drivers license in CA....
"California residents who cannot establish legal presence in the United States may apply for a driver's license if they can show eligible proof of identification and residency in the state. These driver's licenses may not be used for identification purposes. By law, no one may discriminate against a holder of an AB-60 license, or use this license to attempt to question the holder's citizenship or immigration status."

"California", "they", and "them" are very vague terms. Do you actually means "California politicians"?

And speaking of "punitive legislation and regulation", the latest set of "California Values" laws went above and beyond of "the State not helping the Feds", now the State actually punish regular Californians simply for helping the Feds upholding American immigration laws.

Not only that the Californian politicians want to openly circumventing Federal immigration laws, but they are FORCING Californians (police officers, jail officials, university officials, lanlords, private employers) to do it too:

A new law, which made California a “sanctuary state,” prohibits police from inquiring about one’s immigration status or, in most cases, becoming involved in federal immigration processes.

jail officials can only transfer inmates to immigration officials if the inmates are convicted of certain crimes.

It is also illegal for landlords to reveal a tenant’s citizenship status.

The law also bars university officials from assisting immigration officers.

Effective January 1, 2018, all California employers are prohibited from allowing immigration enforcement agents to enter nonpublic areas of a workplace without a judicial warrant. Employers are also prohibited from allowing an immigration enforcement agent to access, review or obtain most employee records without subpoena or judicial warrant, or from unnecessarily re-verifying the employment eligibility of an employee. Employers in violation of this new law face penalties in an amount between US$2,000 and US$5,000 for a first violation and between US$5,000 and US$10,000 for each subsequent violation.

I mean both. When the fed eliminates SALT or property tax deductions precisely aimed at states like California, it's going beyond the politicians. Sure, there are a lot of liberals in California but it's also the biggest economy in the country and those Hollywood liberals pay quite a bit in taxes already which funds whatever it is California is doing. It's not like the liberals are just talking a bunch of mess while living in a tax free state. They are paying their way at the state level to some degree and other Californians benefit via the government's use of those taxes.

So, it's not just about the politicians.

And they're not circumventing federal immigration laws. They are ensuring that they are not participating in the enforcement of immigration laws. Arguing otherwise disregards that state and federal laws are completely different and immigration moreso than others. Every time a state official of any capacity at any level makes an inquiry into the immigration status of anyone, they are investigating the application of a federal law. So, the California taxpayer would then be paying for federal enforcement. The only way to prevent your state taxpayers from paying for federal immigration enforcement is to make it as clear as possible to California official representatives (like the cops) that they can't do it.

This topic frustrates me because people keep talking about how the fed should do something about immigration and the negatives of California's policy. But they seem completely unaware of the extent to which states like California have been acting outside of their state mandates to help the fed. The states are subsidizing the federal government on this issue through their law enforcement arms.

Immigration enforcement is a 100% federal responsibility. So, if you're fine with the Federal Government threatening to cut off state funding over immigration then you should be fine with the state government no longer lending their state resources to the issue.

And that federal government money they were threatening to cut off wasn't going to politicians. The fed is f'ing the California people. You should be happy that your state politicians aren't just lying down and taking it. Even if you disagree with them on the specifics on immigration policy.

Californian tax payers don't pay for immigration enforcement. How do I know that? Let's just say my CA law enforcement agency lost a multi-million dollars contract with ICE to hold undocumented detainees. We could have use that money to upgrade our fleet and purchase new equipment.

It is no longer a case of "California not lending state resources to the Feds".

California politicians are now trying to punish regular Californians for VOLUNTARILY cooperating with the Feds (namely private employers and landlords), with no "State resources" involved.

And that federal government money they were threatening to cut off wasn't going to politicians. The fed is f'ing the California people. You should be happy that your state politicians aren't just lying down and taking it. Even if you disagree with them on the specifics on immigration policy.

If the Federal Government is successful in turning off the taps, it's because of the California government fucked the California people, by playing stupid games.

If a landlord or citizen outs an illegal immigrant what happens? Jail, a fine or worst?

Thankfully, Trump's tremendous flip-flop on immigration and his new "Bill of Love" will make this move mute.

Don't worry, Silicon Valley CEO's. Your three dollar an hour illegal maids, nanny's and gardener's will be kept safe, even at the federal level.

Whoever put this up has some balls.

But muh vandalism! But muh rule of law!

This “brave patriot” is probably on the front lines of mom’s basement.

And reading Breitbart to get his false narrative talking points in order... “Millions of illegal voters!!?!?! What, you want evidence? Oh. Nm/jk.”

that's great.

now CA's population will increase overnight, most of them will be documented/undocumented immigrants with rap sheet fleeing from other states.

So true that sucks big time . It’s a safe haven for them here now..

If you one day finds out that the people who rents your apartment/house are breaking immigration laws, and the Social Security numbers that they provided on their paperwork were bogus/stolen, prepare to to pay $2000 in civil penalty to each law-breaker that you reports to the authorities.

If you're an employer who one day finds out that an employee working for your company is breaking immigration laws and decide to informs the authorities, the penalties for you are $2000 to $5000 for the first "violation", and $5000 to $10,000 for each subsequent "violation".
