California Becomes 1st State to Ban Public School's "Redskins" Sport Teams & Mascots.

There's a bunch of different tribes, I don't believe you can speak for all of them, if any.

Nope, but a recent study by the California State University San Bernadino shows that over two-thirds of Native Americans think the nickname "Redskin" is offensive. In the US of A, that's known as super-majority.

When the campaign to ban the "Redskin" nickname in public schools was being pushed through California Assembly by the National Congress of American Indians, a grand total of ZERO tribe in the California stood up and say "No way! That nickname is cute, we like to keep it". Nor is there anyone protesting in the streets now that the Governor signed it into law.

Incidentally, the same study also showed that over two-thirds of people who AREN'T Native Americans don't think it's offensive. That would explains you and a few others in this thread, who couldn't comprehend why the Natives don't like that adorable nickname.

Do irish find it offensive? I'm part irish it doesn't bother me but it might bother some. It doesn't sound as bad as redskin tho

Don't know. But surely you can say which % need to before everyone steps in and puts an end to the usage. Unless of course it's just a matter of some small minority crying loudly and pacification trumps principle.

Sounds the same to me. Irish are a group of people that are depicted as this lucky charm character who likes to resort to violence. Redskins are a group of people depicted as proud warriors. Big difference being that the Irish were united under a country name whereas the pre-European inhabitants of the USA were of multiple tribes and have no unifying name to refer to them as that isn't going to be demeaning by some standard. How's a team in the nation's capital supposed to be all inclusive when honoring all the tribes? lol at "Native Americans" and "Indians" being somehow respectful or neutral. Was "Braves" already taken at the time? That name seems to meet the sensitivity standards.

Personally I'm for removing any and all references to tribes and tribe names in American public schools. Why should government institutions pay tribute to non-Americans of the past and those who refuse to integrate in the present?

Hey, I'm not PC, and the punchline was on purpose.
Yes that's why I included it, so it would be clear you were just setting up a joke even if I was segueing off to an argument meanwhile.

Red Indians need to stop being so sensitive. Their ancestors used to scalp their enemies for Petes sake!

Not all parts of the country.

And most likely, so did yours. Look it up.

There was a school team called the Crusaders when I was growing up, it got changed because some Muslims complained. Do you guys remember when the "anti-redskin" crowd tried to make an equivalent to offend White people and they made a fake team called the "Fightin' Whities" and sold merch of the team? It kinda backfired when people used it as a symbol for normalizing caricature mascots.

well duh. much of california's economy and politics are fueled by the gambling/casino industry on its native american reservations

Well if they are going to PC they should do it correctly and ban the following names and teams from playing in their state.

Atlanta Braves

Chicago Blackhawks

Kansas City Chiefs

Cleveland Indians

Cleveland Browns

Minnesota Vikings

Dallas Cowboys

And we are just getting started.

Huge surprise... A bunch of presumably white conservatives think it's a terrible idea to have a mascot based on a Minorities skin color.

Cool story, War Room.

Why do you hate whitey?

I'm the whitest dude you will ever meet in your life. It's assholes and conservatives I don't like. And those are the only type of people you'll see calling this move a product of the PC Police.

To be fair, I think White Liberals who identify as other races, including Native Americans, are equally as ridiculous.

I'd venture to say Paul Brown would still consider it an honor.

Doesn't matter Brown is a trigger word and could be viewed as an insult by some brown people.

You are no longer allowed to call a flip chart and flip chart, guess why.

They didn't steal it. They either fought them for it or purchased it, just like everyone other group of people throughout human history. Also, Indians didn't "own" the land thus it could never be stolen. Land doesn't belong to anyone, it's simply there. If you can protect it from another group of people, it's yours; if you can't, it's theirs. Maybe that's brutal but once again, that's true for all groups of people at all points in human history.

Read the book Empire of the Summer Moon for starters and get back to me when you are more educated and less ignorant of the *true* history or the USA.
