Bulging disk... Need advice

^If you know how to play butterfly. I know a 135 pound pro fighter than go a fractured sternum and broken ribs when he was doing butterfly on a 300 pound dude and sat with his posture broken under the guy. Dude sprawled on the back of his head.

Plus you got that chin strap pass to deal with.

A good butterfly guard guy will generally know how to hide his head. After all, butterfly guard is like wrestling from your butt as somebody of this forum said time and time ago. And if you don't know how to shoot in wrestling, you'll be caught in a guillotine.. same stuff to an extent..

Plus.. I mean,135 pounds guy vs 300 pounds guy.. the problem might lie here more than the kind of guard played.. honestly when you roll with a guy this heavier than you, every time you play some kind of open guard that put you at risk of being hard stucked by the top guy leaves you potentially at risk of something bad to happen..

"Doctor says I definitely shouldn't be doing XYZ....so I'm going to post on an internet message board asking medical advice from people who have no medical training and if they do, they haven't seen X-rays/MRI's/Etc to accurately diagnose anything"

Seriously, you should listen do your doctor or find a good sports Ortho. Back/spine issues are not something to fuck with unless you don't care at all about anything later in life.

You know, I was actually going to go back to train In. A coulle of weeks, if I had listen to my doc I wouldn't have been grappling for this long, so I said fuck it...actually most of us wouldn't (us over 30s) thanks to some of the experiences of our fellow sherdogers, I will take my time to fully recover...

I'm glad I posted this thread, has actually opened my eyes.

I'm dealing with a bulging disc in my neck right now.

It was feeling better so I went back to training last week, but it's now feeling aggravated again. I haven't been getting the same nerve pain I was getting, but it's pretty clear I need more time off.

It's already been two months, it'll probably be another month at least.

It really sucks taking so long off, but as everyone in here is saying, it's better to take the time to recovery now rather than completely fuck up your spine and have to stop completely.

Good call man. It is a struggle.

In the mean time swim! Swimming is a fantastic rehabilitation exercise.

Not at all man!

First doc I saw said I ether get cortisone shots or a fucking new hip and never break fall again! I quizzed him hard because, duh, I'm not going down easy and he had zero, zip, nada for any answers to the questions I already knew the answers to.

Fuck that!

This as from a "Sports Medicine" specialist!

The next people I saw were like "Sure, you're fit as a fiddle and are a great candidate for scraping all the cartilage out of your hip and installing a cap and socket"

Bingo!

Hey it's fucking 2017 and there's this awesome invention called Google and the internet!

You can pump your IQ and know when "doctors" are pulling your fucking leg man!

LOL!

Man, honestly you are the best judge of what is best and working for you. I have several issues with my c3-c7 and t1-t3 tracking is what has proven to work the best for me. It allows for alignment and decompression. I don't know how you would accomplish this in your case. Ive heard a lot of people complaining about inversion tables making thoracic problems worst. I do traction with my issues are all upper spin so I can accomplish traction with stretches and a neck pulling device.. Hope this helps.

BTW
I have seen many doctors and most of them could have got their degree from a cracker jack box and it wouldn't have made any difference in what they knew.

Do yourself a huge favor and go to Amazon and order any book on low back disorders by Stuart McGill. Do the exercises religiously and follow his advice on how to stay injury free in everyday life. The books are a good education on lower back injuries. I have been injury free for almost 2 years now.

Basically... Grapplers deal with these type of injuries all the time, just looking for some advice on what type of supplemental training I could do to avoid any further injury, which it may come with time, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.

I have a herniated disc on my lower lumber L5.

Got crotozone shot that relieved a lot of pain. Yoga does help.

That advice!

The lowest impact, highest total muscle group exercise out there!

Mid August I'm going to be a fucking fish!

My last consult appointment in late May, surgery in late June and ocean swimming in mid August...

@BJJ_Rage It's all about the doctors you see. Spend an hr or so researching on Google the surgery you might need however experimental than look up chat groups that have the same injury. That's how I found the chop shop in my area!

The group I saw yesterday at UCSD have marathon runners and every kind of high impact activity on their hip resurfacing installs!

More training than I ever expected to be able to do again!

Fucking holy shit WOOT!

Full training and breakfalling again a year from now!

You'd be a fool to ignore your doctor's advice and stop doing bjj.
Don't fuck around with your back.
Back pain is the worst to deal with and try to even get comfortable.
Quit while you have a chance not to make it worse

Stop doing bjj for me is about as bad as dying... I'll keep doing this till the day I can't walk no more...

That day may arrive sooner than it needs to.
Why is bjj so important to you, are you in competition?
If not, consider the sacrifice you'd be making. A lifetime of the most untreatable, discomforting kind of pain - back pain- for... what?
Trophies?
Or putting money into your school?

Its hard to explain, I don't compete anymore, it just make me happy. I don't know what else can I say...

It's really hard to give up something that makes you happy.
But I work in a hospital and back pain is such a bitch, dude.
I hope you consider it. What you get from it, mostly, I think you could get from other things
Except the one on one competition

27 years of disk hernias, degenerative disease and spondylolisthesis checking in....

Disk bulges can get better but not if you stress them bending the wrong way (normally flexion). It takes many months and can be ruined in an instant. So listen to the pros.

Yoga not only can make them a lot worse but cause them in the first place. Some.poeple can do yoga bends all day. Others, like me, find they are dangerous. So you have to be selective with your poses. I wouldn't be taking up yoga whilst I've got an acute episode myself.

I personally find half guard to be pretty back friendly. However I tape to any kind of back stack or similar pressure however it occurs. I've spend months I'm excruciating pain drugged to eyeballs staring at the ceiling. Not going there again.

Also best exercises whilst in acute pain I've seen, and I've done a lot over the years, are the McKenzie ones. And then onto McGill's ones.

Honestly I can relate with this so much.. had other kind of health problems that almost put me out of Bjj for good, years ago.. and when I was contemplating it, it really felt like dying.. I know it's surely not like this for everybody, but still I can understand why you cling to it with all yourself..
