Woodley, then Colby, now Usman all fighting Maia, making their name off of him.

All performances were not great, but to beat current Maia, that's how you beat him.

The unfortunate part is that all these fighters are being launched to the top of the division just because they have TDD.

Hopefully these wrestlers will get exposed by the actual good fighters in the top 5.

    That is all.

Not just now. Check Maia's record.

Weidman chose the same path as well. So did Munoz.
Fitch , Sonnen, Story failed with it.
Shields added ground work, because he's so good at BJJ he can stay in Maia's guard.

Every wrestler fights the same vs Maia. It is what it is

Lot of specialists at WW right now

You've got Wonderboy and Till with striking, Maia with grappling, Colby and Usman with wrestling

Kind of tailor made for a guy like Woodley right now, he couldn't have picked a better time to grab that belt if he'd tried

Maia should just go back to pulling guard

Copy pasta from the other thread

    http://www.fightmetric.com/fighter-details/427b5953ac8e3a27

Maia fought 6 All-American wrasslers in UFC. Here is his TD record against them:

Chael Sonnen: 1/4 TDs - WIN by triangle choke
Mark Munoz: 0/7 TDs - LOSS by UD
Chris Weidman: 0/7 TDs - LOSS by UD
Tyron Woodley: 0/21 TDs - LOSS by UD
Colby Covington: 0/13 TD - LOSS by UD
Kamaru Usman: 0/15 TDs - LOSS by UD

All in all, he got 1 TD out of 67 TD attempts against them. The onus is 100% on Maia to learn, adapt and improve. Until he does these wrestlers will continue to exploit the glaring hole in his game. The sad part is Maia keeps tying the same shit over and over expecting different results. That's pure insanity.

He did improve his wrestling over the years. Just not enough to make up for the years of elite wrestling training those guys went through. Early career Maia wouldn't have been able to take down Kim, Story and Fitch. He got better, just not enough to take down the best wrestlers in the division

And what else could he do at that point? He has to keep shooting for takedowns it's his whole game

You say that like Maia isn't pretty boring himself. Don't pretend he's not just because he's a nice and humble person in real life.

Woodley, who was already champ for years after beating the likes of Wonderboy, Daley, Condit, Gastelum and of course Lawler had to make name of Maia??

0-6 vs American wrestlers is a bad look.

0-6 is one thing, but 1 TD out of 67 TD attempts is next level terrible.

    Sonnen, Fitch, Story

    He is actually 3-6
    Sonnen, Fitch, Story - wins
Colby, Woodley, Kamaru, Weidman, Munoz, Shields - losses

Not that I don't agree, but he fought 3 of them when he was old and out of shape.
The Weidman fight... well, Weidman is that good and he is much bigger.
I have nothing on the Munoz fight, he is a beatable fighter.

But, yeah, he doesn't do well against wrestlers. And he should have tried some new things. Especially in the Woodley fight.
His best wins are Condit, Brown, Masvidal, known for their striking. And Fitch.

I thought he beat both shields and Munoz, too. Both were controversial decisions at the time.

Agreed. Maybe it's just me, but it seems the problem being discussed is less the tangible and practical question of Maia's ability, but more the matter of fan perception and how just because Maia beats a lot of good people, anyone who beats Maia must be amazing. To this day, the fact that fighters must be ranked still supplants any logic of stylistic differences and MMA math takes over and mixes with anonymous internet groupthink into just the absolute general retardation MMA fans are known for. And that's just one problem we're never going to solve, unfortunately.

I can't imagine how bad it would have been if Chael beat Anderson, and we would have gotten swirling masses of "Anderson is best in world. Chael (who should have been tailor-made to beat Anderson if his submission defense wasn't ten tons of fuckawful) beat Anderson. Therefore, Chael is best"

Yeah, Wood really went out and put a stamp on those wins, didn't he?

Got a draw vs Wonderboy and then squeaked out a decision most people thought he lost

    Daley who struggles with wrestlers

Condit who got a freak injury

Gastelum who most people thought won that fight

and Lawler who was coming off like 4 wars and had been hit an insane amount of times in those fights

Quit kissing Tyrone's big black butt and think before you speak next time.
