Black Belt Road Trip Part 2... “Escape From New York”

I had such a great experience in Idaho and Oregon traveling and training (http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f12/black-belt-road-trip-long-read-2141771/) that I decided to continue the journey by training in my original home town, New York City!

I wanted to give you guys my training schedule while there...

    Renzo Gracie

    Thursday, July 19 6-7:30

    Marcelo Garcia

    Saturday, July 21 12:30-1:30

    Shaolin

Sunday, July 22 Open mat 12:00-2:00

If any of you F12‘ers train there, give me a heads up. I’d love to get a chance to roll with you and hang out.

The purpose of my trip is to meet people who train and observe the jiu jitsu lifestyle. I was born in the Bronx and have been in Manhattan so many times without training. This time my trip into the city will definitely include jiu jitsu!

Hope to see you on the mat!

Also, if you have any suggestions for places to get some food after training let me know...

I am also hoping that I can take a shower at these schools. Walking around the city with my stinky gi is not very desirable but a stinky/sweaty body would not be that fun...

    Marcelo's gym has showers.

And there's a really good buffet (Health food style) on 6th one block from his school as well. I ate there a shitload of times after training haha

That would be cool. Kimuralex who posts here will be there. We are going to hit up a place for lunch afterwards

That might be a tough one. I have no family there and it's a little bit too long for a car trip. But, you never know...

That sounds good... Thanks. It could be a 2006 Brazil reunion!

I don't know what my schedule is just yet but even if I don't make the class I'll try my best to meet up with you guys for lunch since I'm a fat kid that loves to eat.

Asking if there's any good places to get some food in Manhattan is like asking if there's anywhere good to train in Brazil. What kind of food are you looking for?

Yeah, I know...I am more interested in eating at places that other people enjoy. I want to go to cool "hang outs" and talk to people about life. I want to be like a friend Norm would bring to Cheers. I am more interested in atmosphere than food. I'll be wearing post-training attire so hopefully nothing too fancy.

In NYC there is a good restaurant on every block practically.

Also, are you still training in Rockaway?

Yeah, that's one of my favorites. Last time I was there I got the "tower of seafood". Awesome...

Actually I was never training in Rockaway, I was training in Western Nassau County where I lived, sort of close to the Rockaways I guess. I've since moved to Queens but still training at the same place.

So many schools, so little time. I'll be dancing in that area Friday night. It could work...small chance though this time. Thank you for the invite. I read your website. It seems like a nice school...

That's right. I think we talked about "The Coral" house once. I am only getting a few days in the city. I'll spend most of my time this trip with my family near Albany.

You chose the precise week I'm away on vacation to visit Renzo Gracie Academy. Anyway, Renzo's has showers as well but bring your own soap.

The showers, locker rooms, and overall facilities at Renzo's are all great. The place is practically designed for visitors, probably because they get so many.

Places I would recommend checking out:

    Pork:
Momofuku Ssam Bar The Bo Ssam is amazing. Food is expensive, but not ridiculous

    Burgers:
Pianos Have the red wine burger. Very inexpensive by NYC standards and 90% of people come here for the bar, not knowing they serve food. They are missing out
DBGB Try the Frenchie or the Piggie. All of the charcuterie, rillettes, and pate are amazing

    Brooklyn?: Hipster havens
Roberta's: Best "gourmet" pizza in NY
The Dressler: Haven't had a bad dish there

    Dim Sum:
Jing Fong: be comfortable in the knowledge that you may not be sure what body part you are eating, but it will be excellent. The people watching is also amazing

    Mexican food:
LOL - you live in CA, disappointment is imminent

Hope this helps. PM me if you need any more info.
