Arbitus to be more exact. A friend had to leave our gym in Syracuse due to Navy reassignment and is looking for a new place to train.

And no Team Lloyd Rapist affiliation, please.

The closest gym that I am aware of to Arbutus is Baltimore Martial Arts Academy in Catonsville. They are affiliated with GF Team. A few of their guys roll in during open mats and are tough. I think they rotate through black belts from Brazil, although I can't confirm that. If you friend feels like driving 25 minutes, he is more than welcome to stop in at Baltimore BJJ. We have 4 black belts and a smattering of other belts. Occasionally, AOJ black belt Rick Slomba is there while he sorts out opening his own school. We are doing a month free for new students in June.

If you can make it there, go to Baltimore BJJ. I trained there for about a year when I was in college and the owner/instructor Lee Synkowski is just a good guy. It's a nice group of guys and good training.

I second Baltimore BJJ. Lee is amazing and Monroe Hall is the new head instructor. A great group of people and they also consistently get people visiting from other gyms, including a few pro fighters.

So Lee isn't the head instructor anymore?

From what I understand, Lee is taking a back seat these days to give a bit more time to his career at NIH. He is still on the mats a ton and still a monster

Damn. Didn't even know he worked at NIH. Anyway I remember seeing Monroe Hall compete maybe 8 years ago. I remember he was a really strong guard player.

As stated, Lee handed over the main instructor duties to Monroe about a month ago. Lee still owns and oversees the gym. It's a fun but tough gym to train at and pretty much my second home for almost 11 years. To anyone that is in the area, June is free. Even if you don't sign up, come in and train.

Baltimore BJJ, and it isn't close in my opinion. Good people and training. Lots of classes with a wide variety. Large facility. Very laid back atmosphere. Currently running a promotion to attract new people for the month of June too. Sundays are a big open mat that attract lots of people from all local schools as well.

As mentioned, there is also a GFTeam affiliate in the Catonsville area which is a little closer. Pimenta is there sometimes, and they bring in people from Rio every so often. Not sure about their student base.

Cutty's gym is old school in feel but modern in its approach, run by Dennis "Cutty" Wise
