    Collective soul wasn't grunge.

    Neither was Janes addiction.

It was all pretty much alternative. "Grunge" was whatbyhe media and people who didn't listen called it, "alternative" is what we called it.

White Zombie was never considered grunge, although maybe they would have been if they were from Seattle. They were industrial metal.

Fun fact: according to Kurt Cobain Peal Jam is not grunge because it had too much lead guitar.

This this this this this and this. I'd personally flip Soundgarden with Alice in Chains, but I can live with it.

The song "Release Me" is the the great underlying idea to Star Wars in a bottle.

Pearl Jam is GOAT. Can't be denied.

haha I was 9yrs old & in the 4th grade when we went on a school trip to BMG. we had the option to select a Whitney Houston tape or Pearl Jam tape as a free gift. thank God I chose Pearl Jam.

Release Me is an excellent track. the hidden track is super bugged out too.

Tool definitely was not and is not grunge at all. They're more progressive metal. White Zombie wasn't either, nor Jane's, nor SP.

Probably the other bands who really were "grunge" hated the label.

I don't know if you would consider all these bands as grunge, but they are all great nonetheless.

I wrote best 90s bands. Not grunge for a reason. I lived in the music scene in that era, we thought of grunge as a look not music. Pearl Jam wore cargo shorts and boots. And weren't glam. That was grunge. But their music had lead guitars and solos and weren't downtuned. They wee a rock band. Soundgarden was metal to me. So was Alice. And I never thought of it as alternative...it was rock music.

ts, if I had to make a 90s soundtrack for the type of music I think you mean, here was my iPod playlist. I left off megabits like Smells like Teen Spirit and Jeremy bc I'm sure u know those.

    Nearly Lost You-Screaming Trees
    Crown of Thornes-Mother Love Bone
Sonic Reducer, State of Love and Trust, Release-Pearl Jam
Would, Roostr, Angry Chair-Alice in Chains
Sex Type Thing, Vasoline, Plush, Creep, All that Remains,--STP
    Zero, Cherub Rock, Bullet-Smashing Pumpkins
On a plane, Sliver, Come as You are--Nirvana
    River of Deceit-Mad Season
    Violet, Doll parts-Hole
    Pretty Noose, Outshined, My Wave--Soundgarden
    Pretend we're Dead-L7

TS if you want a nice "seattle sound" compilation
get the OST for the film singles
i'd also recommend watching the film

it epitomises what we felt at the time

soundgarden, pearl jam and Alice are all in the film

teensspirit was going to be on the OST
but got got pulled when nirvana blew up he mainstream

Smashing Pumpkins were sometimes referred to as "glam grunge", I guess, although I never personally considered them to be grunge as much as pure 90's alt-rock.

Jane's Addiction reminds me of Soul Asylum and Blind Melon in that they're also better termed as "Alternative Rock", but at times it's impossible not to hear the similarities with grunge. I think the main reason they don't come off as classic grunge bands is because all of them have sounds that are too pop-y and bright. There's also a punk element to all of these bands that simply doesn't exist in grunge-- at all. Grunge is the anti-punk genre of rock.
