Bellator 180: Aaron Pico vs. Zach Freeman PBP (Discussion)

Freeman won the 2016 IBJJF Masters World Championship in the purple belt division. Yet none of the announcers thought to mention it.

Jon Jones-Debuted on the undercard UFC 87

Cain Velasquez- Debuted on the undercard of UFC 83

Chris Weidman- Debuted on some random Versus UFC card

Connor McGregor- Debuted on some random European card

See the difference between those and what Bellator did with Pico?

All of that investment and he ducked into that uppercut. Well back to evaluating pro fighters when they are pro fighters, not amateurs for me.

Wasn't just ducking into the uppercut, he was frazzled by the first knee.

Wrestling and boxing isn't MMA. That's a wake-up call for every wrestler who talks shit on BJJ/MMA grappling, because they're so used to seeing wrestlers who have been training jiu-jitsu for years and they think submission defense somehow just became part of wrestling somewhere along the way. It didn't. If you're a wrestler with some boxing and you think you can train a bit with Eddie Bravo then be fine, you're getting choked out if your opponent has an actual ground game.

It's not like he was grazed. He got hit by a flush uppercut. He ran right into it
Exactly, anyone, anyone gets dazed when they run in chin first without regard.

Hopefully this humbles him a bit - it's not sparring these guys are there to take your head off and you can't go in without respect (especially with hands taped, and small gloves).

The guy Pico debuted against doesn't have a wikipedia page.

Why did Pico debut at 0-0? what was so special about him? was he destroying dudes in the gym like Cummins or something? Can I ask another question?

He was 3x National Champion in Highschoool wrestling, he was the first American to win the Cadet Freestyle world championships in wrestling. He was a shoe in for division 1 wrestling (would have easily been a 4x all american, national champion etc), the Olympic Training center offered to sign him out of highschool and prepare him for the 2020 Olympics. Kid was a multiple time golden gloves boxer and ranked at the top of the nation in boxing as a Junior growing up. He also was a Pankration hand to hand combat champion. At 19 years old he started training out of AKA. Aaron Pico pushed aside a full ride to any college in the U.S. on a wrestling scholar ship to pursue MMA, he pushed aside training out of the Olympic wrestling center and wrestling internationally...He believed he was going to be the first MMA and Boxing champion. The hype is understandable but it crashed...and honestly, he should have beat Freeman, Freeman has a glass jaw and sucks.

The good thing about the pico fight is it changed the feeling of the event so far and gave us some excitement. Hopefully things keep picking up now. I thought larkin lima was underwhelming

Well theyre both basically the same age and super young.

4 real though. He got staggered by the first strike freeman threw. He didnt try to block it but tried to grab the leg this hand low like the amateur he is. Then he got rocked and dropped by the first punch and choked out.

Im worried that even though he comes back from this, his opponents will know he has a glass jaw.

Hopefully Meathead and Chael don't throw the fight for $$$

Lol sounds like terrible life decisions most people with his record can get started in MMA between 28-30 and still dominate should have at least tried the Olympics first over a sport at pays crap.

Not to mention, it was his PRO debut. At least Jon, Cain, etc had a few fights in the regionals.
