I'm having my second stint restarting BJJ. I've competed in boxing off and on for 5 years. I figured I'd continue boxing and make it my goal to attend at least 2 no gi and 1 gi BJJ class per week. What's a realistic timeline to compete in one of these amateur MMA shows? I see a lot of people going in there looking like trash -- I will NOT be one of those people and put the mat time in if I'm going to do it.

To wrestle is a fundamental MMA skill.

I'd say at least 6 months, a year would be better. But as important as BJJ is to work on wrestling and clinch fighting and make sure your TD defense and ability to get off the cage and into space to box are on point.

BJJ is good but see if you can find an mma school if that is what you are interested in. You're not going to learn how to fight in the clinch or how to deal with the fence in most bjj schools.

Strictly talking BJJ...6 mos to not be lost and 1 year to be on a decent path. Like others have stated, wrestling and clinch work are also key.
