Royalties weren't a thing in Elvis's time. He profited off the work of poor Blues musicians and never paid them a dime.

most soul and rnb musicians didnt write alot of their songs. Some people have a gift for song writing, some for performance, and until the 60s it was rare to have both.

as for the poor blues musicians, I believe they sold their songs alot of them time for not alot of money.
