Hockey
Last game of the season and the game would decided which pool we ended up in for the first round of the playoffs. Oddly, a win or tie would put us in the harder pool playing the 1st and 5th place teams while a lose would put us against the 2nd and 6th place teams. In reality though the division is pretty well balanced and the only team we haven't beaten at least once was the team we were playing so regardless of who we play if we play well we can win.

The game was pretty fast paced and neither team was playing particularly tight defense. However the goalies played well and the first period ended with us down 1-0. In the second period we kicked things into gear and took the lead 3-2. Toward the end of the period things started to chippy which was intensified when we scored early in the third period to go up 4-2. Unfortunately we relaxed after this which gave our opponents the chance to come back. That was really the story of the game. When we played hard we dominated but if we gave the other team space or made lazy plays they killed us. Eventually they clawed their way back and tied it 4-4. We quickly answered to make it 5-4 only for our opponents to score again to tie it 5-5 and that's how things ended.

We ended the season with an okay record of 7-10-4. We had a pretty rough start to the season as we were bumped up 3 divisions from last Winter but after being moved down a division we settled in and played much better. Personally I finished with 2 G, 7 A in 9 games which is pretty good considering all of the time that I had off.

The playoffs start next week but I won't be playing since it's a late game. Unfortunately we will be missing two of our other centers leaving us with only 1 so someone will have to step up for a game!

Conditioning
5 minute warm-up on the treadmill then 20 minutes of intervals on the stairmill. 40 seconds on (level 12), 40 seconds off (level 2). Level 12 seemed slower on these stairmills and this location is older so I wonder if they don't go as fast as the newer ones at my usual gym.

I didn't play hockey last week because it was a late game (it was our first playoff game and they lost 4-1) and didn't play yesterday because it was an off week. I did get out for a walk though which wouldn't really be noteworthy except that I was wearing my son (in a baby carrier) so it made it into some low-intensity LISS.

This coming Sunday's hockey game is do or die. We need to win in regulation to make it into the semi-finals. If we win in overtime the other team still gets a single point which will put them ahead of us still.

Last week was crazy busy so I only got to the gym on Friday and did bench, rows, and some abs. I played hockey on Sunday and felt really out of sorts. I played okay in the first half of the game but really died in the third period. It was a close game but we ended up losing 5-3 and getting eliminated. We now have 5 weeks off before the Summer season starts. I will still only be playing early games for the Summer so expected to only play 3 or 4 games, maybe 5 or 6 if we make it all the way to the Summer championship.

Also, my week is setup now so that I will probably only be able to make it to the gym two days/week now. I will be doing my Monday night walk with my son which isn't really LISS but at least gets me out and moving. I might also be getting a new job in the coming months so that will change everything.

What's the potential new job Dr?

Similar to what I do now (automated testing) except on the server performance side of things instead of browser-based testing. My Manager recently left and is totally poaching people to fill his team at the new place. I'm also trying to get the promotion to Manager at my current job but they are really taking their time because the entire company is undergoing a restructure. The new place is likely to make an offer before my current place has made up their mind. The thing that sucks is that my current company does reviews and bonuses in May so I'm hoping this entire process stretches out so I can get the bonus and then jump ship. Really I would be happy to stay at my current company but I need/want the promotion so we can afford to have my wife stay home when her maternity leave runs out.

Also just out of interest I met with a recruiter for a start-up that is looking for someone to build their automation from the ground up. It sounds like a cool opportunity and they will probably offer me a solid salary but because they are a startup they won't have the other perks that larger companies do (e.g. yearly bonuses, RSP-matching, benefits that cover your entire family). It sounds like something I totally would have jumped at 5 years ago, though 5 years ago I didn't have any experience doing any web-based testing so I was less marketable. Moving from desktop products to web products in Sept 2015 was the best thing I could have done for my career.

Conditioning!
Did 35 minutes of conditioning split between the stairmill and treadmill with a few minutes of walking to cool down. When I was at the doctor last week for a check-up (finally got myself a family doctor) my resting heart rate was 68 BPM. Back in my Muay Thai days it was usually around 50. So yeah, more LISS is definitely in order.

I've also been doing a lot of walking with my wife which is surprisingly tiring since I do it with my 19 lb son strapped to my chest. He just passed 6 months and is a big dude. Around 75th percentile for length and 85th percentile for weight. Future power forward in the making!

Wed April 12, 2017

C2 rower and dynamic stretching as usual. Started doing squats and got up to 115x5 and felt something tweak in my left knee. I did a few bodyweight squats and it hurt so I aborted the squats. Instead I did some light leg extensions, hamstring curls, and back extensions. Finished with cable crunches.

Went to the gym last Thursday and did a bunch of accessory work: curls, triceps extensions, shoulder raises, rear delt flies, cable wood choppers. Then I got sick over the weekend ugh...

285x1

315x1x6 (singles)

I figured out today that I wasn't sitting back enough on my pulls and thus wasn't tight enough. I realized my error on the second rep of 315 and then the last 4 were much smoother and faster.

- Step-ups: 2x10/leg, 2x5 kg plates
- Plank: 2x60 seconds

Fairly light today because last week when I tried to squat I thought my knees were going to explode. Felt fine today though.

Thurs April 20, 2017

Warmed up on the C2 and then did a Fitbit workout. My wife recently got a Fitbit and their Fitstar app for motivation. I said that I'd do some of the workouts to help keep her motivated. This was just a basic evaluation to help scale the rest of the workouts. It consisted of:
  • High knees
  • Push-ups
  • Squats
  • Back plank
  • Pike push-ups
  • Bicycle crunches
It was pretty easy. And that supersetted push-ups and chin-ups and then finished with some hanging leg raises.

Tues May 2, 2017

Conditioning

- C2 rower: 3 minute warm-up
- Treadmill: 15 minutes, HR around 125-130 BPM
- Stairmill: 15 minutes, HR around 140-145 BPM
- Treadmill: 2 minute cooldown

I started my new job last week and am sorting out the logistics of going to the gym. It's actually a pretty casual atmosphere (considerin that it's a bank) but I don't want to immediately start taking long lunches to go to the gym. Today I spent about 25 minutes walking to/from the gym plus changing and showering which only leaves about 35 minutes for actual training. Since I've been so inactive lately I figure doing cardio is a good idea. I also have to figure out the best time to go since today I went at 1:30 and it was crazy busy. I'm not sure this location really has any quiet time really.

Fri May 5, 2017

Conditioning

- C2 rower: 3 minute warm-up
- Treadmill: 10 minutes
- Elliptical: 10 minutes
- Bike: 3 minutes
- Stairmill: 8 minutes

HR in the 135-145 range. A small group training class was on the stairmills so I tried the bike but quickly remembered that it's hard to get my HR up on the bike. My legs start to burn like made before my HR breaks 130. The group moved on so I went back to the stairmill.

I finally play hockey again on Sunday which will be fun but I'm going to be super rusty. It's also the only game I'll play in May because I'm not playing late games (this one is the latest and it's at 8:00).

Sun May 7, 2017

Played hockey. I felt good in the first period but started to die in the second. Paced myself better and managed to be okay for the rest of the game. Had some good chances but no points. My line scored one goal at least.

We won 5-4. The third period was full of penalties which basically killed the period and let us hang on to the lead.

Unfortunately I won't be playing again until June at the earliest though we don't have our full schedule so it night longer.
