I missed hockey last night because it was a late game but it didn't really matter as my team crushed the first place team 8-3. Our leading scorer had a huge game with 2G, 3A to lead the way. On the plus side I went skating with my family on Saturday so I at least got some ice time. It wasn't particularly strenuous but was a lot of fun. My oldest niece is learning to skate so I spent a bunch of time with her. I also had some time to just practice my left-foot crossovers since they are pretty sloppy.

Went to the gym yesterday, reached into my bag, and pulled out two t-shirts. In my dark bedroom I thought I grabbed a pair of grey shorts but it was a dry-wick shirt made out of the same material. So no deadlifts for me this week.

    Conditioning!

    - C2 rower: 5 minutes warm-up, followed by 12 intervals. 110m on (about 22-23 seconds), 45 seconds off.

3 minute cooldown on the stairmill plus some lower body stretching.

Back on the ice after a week off. This team destroyed us before Xmas when we were short skaters so we were looking for a bit of revenge. This time they only had 9 skaters (one short of a 2 full lines) so we figured if we kept the pressure on them we could wear them down.

Things got off to a rocky start as they scored on their first shot but we quickly answered back to tie it 1-1. A bit later they scored to make it 2-1 but again we answered back to tie it 2-2. Their goal was sorta my fault as my d-man got beaten in the corner so I left my guy open in front of the net to take the puck carrier. Of course he slide the puck over to the guy I had been covering for an easy open net goal. Luckily I made up for it by scoring the second goal on a sweet wrap-around. I grabbed a loose puck behind the net and managed to jam the puck between the goalie's pad and the post and it just squeezed through.

Early in the 2nd period they scored to make it 3-2 but then our goalie really settled down and started turning everything away. In the third period we started to control the flow of the game and built up a 5-3 lead over the first five minutes of the period. Our opponents answered back to make it 5-4 but we buried two more to take the win 7-4.

One thing that really stood out in this game was that when we pressured the other team we controlled the play. They passed really well so if we gave them time they would move the puck around and make us chase them but when pressured them they made bad plays. For example, twice in the third period they put sloppy passes up the middle of the ice that I intercepted and lead to good scoring chances.

Personally I had a good game. I only had the one goal but also had multiple good chances and after my bonehead play in the first period I settled down defensively and my line really shut the other team down. I still feel a bit out of shape but just reminded myself to keep moving, even if I wasn't going too fast.

Felt good. The gym has Deadlift Deadeners now that they want us to use to protect the floor. I guess they are a cheap alternative to a proper lifting platform. They also have the added benefit of preventing the bar from rolling away on uneven floors. Didn't see to affect my pull.

Last night's game was a back and forth game. We opened the scoring on our first shift but the other team quickly replied and ended the first period up 2-1. In the second period our opponents took a string of penalties and we took control of the game, scoring 3 powerplay goals to go up 4-2.

To start the third period our opponents started being really aggressive and their d-men joined the rush a lot. We totally go caught off guard by this and they scored 3 quick goals to tie things 5-5. After that both teams had their chances but the goalies settled down and made a lot of good saves. With about a minute left in the game our opponents took a stupid roughing penalty and we quickly responded with the game-winning goal. It was a sweet goal as our center won the faceoff to our winger who put a quick shot off the crossbar and in. After that we added an empty net goal to win 7-5.

We've really been on a roll since the New Year, winning 5 out of 6 games. The biggest difference is that our offense has finally kicked back into gear. Through the Fall we were averaging around 2.5 goals per game and over the last 6 games we've averaged just over 6 goals per game! Also our goals against have dropped from around 4.5 to 3.5 goals per game.

Part of the change is that we were bumped down a division so our opponents are a bit weaker but even after being dropped down we went 0-2-1 at first. I think part of the difference is confidence. Now that we've won a few games we feel like we can compete in this division so we are really taking to our opponents. It also helps that I've returned to the team, not that I've been tearing it up but I just add a secondary offensive threat and tend to be solid defensively which lets our top scorers push harder for goals. I have 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 games since coming back.

The radius of the deadeners looks bigger than the plate. That's a good design as it won't affect putting the weight down too much. Bad design is you're losing about 2 inches of ROM. That would bug me.

Yeah I found that slight reduction of ROM made the pulls feel a bit off. They also have the deadeners at my usual gym but the floors there are covered in rubber mats so I won't be using the deadeners unless someone specifically tells me too. I've seen some idiots so slam the weight down and I think they are ruining it for everyone (and they are using between 3 and 4 plates so not some crazy weight that you can't put down in a reasonable manner).

We're getting down to the end of the season. We are currently in 3rd place and we needed to win this game to have a chance to move up to 2nd. Standings don't really matter since every team makes the playoffs but the way the playoff schedule works I will have to miss our first game if we don't end up in 1st or 2nd because it will be a late game.

So on to the game, we were playing the 2nd place team so we needed to win in order to make up the points on them. Unfortunately a few hours before the game two of our leading scorers dropped out because they both had the flu so he definitely need a good team game to make up for that.

The game was a great one. Very fast paced and back and forth the entire game. Early in the game I had a nice assist where I was knocked down behind the net but managed to sweep the puck in front of the net where a winger got a shot on net and then the other winger banged in the rebound. That was just a preview of how the game would be, both teams had to work hard for every chance. Eventually our opponents answered back and we ended the period tied 1-1.

Early in the second period we traded a few goals and ended up down 3-2 but we kept pushing and scored two goals late in the period to go up 4-3. However early in the third our opponents scored a weak goal (our goalie totally should have made the save) to tie things up. After that it was constant action with both teams getting chances and the goalies really standing their ground. Later in the period we traded goals again to make it 5-5.

Late in the game we made a push to get the game winner but to no avail. The game ended tied 5-5. It really was a good game with only one penalty and lots of action. I was absolutely exhausted by the end of the game. I felt pretty good through the first two periods but really started to slow down in the third.

All of the stairmills were in use so I tried intervals on the treadmill. It was rather awkward since you have to hit the "interval" button to switch speeds so after about five minutes I switched to the C2. 110m intervals (21-22 seconds) with 45 seconds rest. Did 10 intervals, so about 10 minutes. Did some walking on treadmill to cool down.

I started the year weighing around 220-222 lb and by the end of January was sitting around 217-218, so down at least a few pounds. February was a bad month and I'm back around 220. Ugh. I need to stop indulging whenever my wife has cravings. Apparently craving sugar is a thing when you are breastfeeding? It also doesn't help that she's always tired and that leads to cravings.
