Hockey (pick-up)
We had a lot of subs last night and everyone seemed to be lacking jump (myself included) which made for a somewhat crappy game. It was really hard to get any sense of rhythm or flow going and by the latter half of the game the pace had really slowed down. It's always tough playing with new players because it's hard to predict what they will do. Not the best game but good cardio work at least.

Hockey (league)
Last game of the regular season. It was a nothing game since we clinched first place a few weeks back but of course we still want to win. We were playing on the small rink at the arena and we always play worse on the smaller surface. Our team generally uses speed and passing to control the play but games on the smaller rink always get a little chippy and have more contrct.

It was a close game and we scored the first goal late in the first period. Both teams had chances but the goalies played well. We scored another one in the second to make it 2-0. In the third the other team made it 2-1 but we quickly answered back to make it 3-1. Both teams had some chances and the other team scored to make it 3-2 but that was all and we went on to win, finishing the season in first place with a 9-1 record.

My season stats were the reverse of last Winter, 15 goals and 5 assists. But this time I did that in 10 games instead of 18 which shows how much better I played (and also our opponents were weaker this season). Hopefully I can keep that up in the playoffs. We now have two weeks off before having our two round robin games. Hopefully we aren't too rusty when we come back.

I also had a couple spills in the game. For one I was going to the net and got slashed and knocked off balance so I had to jump over the goalie and crash into the net. Later in the game I cut into the middle of the ice and went around a few guys but a third guy got in my way and I went down pretty hard. I'm not sure what did it but my left wrist is pretty sure today so I'm not sure if I'll be able to bench but I think it should be fine to brace the bar for squats.

Hockey (Pick-up)
The teams were pretty even and it made for a fast-paced, fun game. I was playing with two older guys but they played smart and we passed well. I think we each had a couple goals.

I was running late and wanted to leave early so I just got some bench and rows in.

I didn't go to the gym today because I was in late. Will do full-body tomorrow instead.

Last week ended up being a write-off. I was in late on Monday so no gym. Monday night my siding guy called and said he had a cancellation so he came on Tues/Wed to redo the siding on my porch enclosure (original contractor did a shit job, fuck him). Then on Thursday I had to take my wife to an eye appointment. I was super busy on Friday so skipped the gym.

I did at least play hockey on Wednesday night so I got some exercise in. The only issue is that I tripped over a guy late in the game and fell on my left wrist and made it worse. It really hurt Thurs/Fri and is still sore today. Hopefully I don't hurt it again tonight. I kept benching light today to avoid stressing it too much.

Hockey (pick-up)
My plan for the game was to try to take it easy and protect my left hand. I ended up playing defense for a few shifts to start the game and of course the first thing happened was I tried to backhand the puck out of the zone only to have someone barrel into me and jolt my hand. On the next shift I tried to make a hard pass up the ice and it killed my wrist. Not a great start.

Luckily I was able to move up to forward and I played a handful of shifts at wing. The good thing is that I was able to rest my wrist for a few shifts and the throbbing went away, the bad thing was that it was resting because the other forwards were completely unorganized and all over the ice so I rarely even touched the puck.

I tried to talk to guys on the bench and figure out which positions they were playing (we had 5 forwards meaning we didn't have two set lines) and they all just seemed to be playing wherever. It was seriously like playing with a bunch of little kids. I asked one guy if he was playing center (my preferred position) and he said he was playing wherever there was a loose puck or a play to be made. Eventually I just said fuck it and started playing center on every shift, other forwards be damned, and wouldn't you know we started playing better and getting more scoring chances. I also managed to avoid smashing my wrist any more so by the end of the game it felt okay.

The last couple days have been a mess so again I haven't made it to the gym. Maybe next week...

Hockey (league)
This was our first playoff game and our opponents had zero subs. 5 skaters, 1 goalie. They were exhausted by the end of the first period so we cruised to an underwhelming 6-1 victory (actual score was 9-1 I think). We have our second round robin game next week but with this win we are guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals regardless of the outcome.

The one positive is that I was able to take it easy and not aggravate my wrist. It's still a bit sore but only when I push it to the limit of its ROM or put a lot a pressure on it. Generally it feels okay. Hopefully I can avoid making it worse in Wednesday night's game and it should be close to 100% by next Sunday.

Hockey (pick-up)
I had a really good game last night. I had the chance to play a bunch with the ringer (the word is that he played briefly for the Oshawa 67s of the OHL) and he's just really fucking good. I really had to push myself to keep up with him but it resulted in a tonne of scoring chances for me and my linemates. It took us a while to score (by which point the ringer had 5 or 6 goals himself) but once we started scoring we all snagged a few. I think I ended the game with 4 goals and was completely exhausted.

I'm going to stop playing in this game in the Fall since my wife and I have a baby on the way (26 weeks yesterday!) and I'm going to miss the game. It's a faster paced game than my Sunday league and is definitely a bit more rewarding when I play well but in the end it's hard to choose a pick-up game over the league team that I put together and lead for the past two years. I'm still going to play with that team but I plan to take a couple months mid-season (probably Nov/Dec) when the baby comes.

Hockey (league)
This was our second round robin playoff game and even though we were already guaranteed to be in the semi-finals a win would give us an easier match-up next week. As expected, the game was a high-scoring chippy game that we won 10-5. Our opponents had one ringer, one solid player who is really big and really aggressive so he's hard to stop, and then maybe one other solid player. So it makes for a really up and down game, basically whenever two of their good players were on the ice it was somewhat competitive and if not we would dominate.

We started to build up a lead in the first period but then in the second they scored a couple quicks goals to make it 6-4 I think. In the third period we started applying more pressure and built up the lead again, eventually winning 10-5. It was a good team game on our end and I think almost everyone had at least a point. I had a few assists early in the game and scored a goal late, maybe the 9th goal?

That means we get an easier match-up next Sunday which is good because we are going to be missing a couple of our better offensive players. Luckily our opponents aren't a high-scoring team so we don't have to worry about out-gunning them, we just need another solid team game with good defense.

Are you going to start pushing your numbers? If you have a daughter, you'd better be fucking hooge!

Well now that the home renovation bullshit is over with I shouldn't have too many "work from home" days so that means I can get back to a regular gym schedule, so yeah time to get my numbers back up to something half respectable!

We're having a boy actually. The baby we lost last year was a girl who we were going to name Charlotte hence my comment in the pub about you stealing my baby name :)

I missed hockey last night because I had to check my wife into the hosptial due to some bleeding. Hurray. She had actually been in for two weeks starting on the August long weeekend because of bleeding and was just released on Monday. Now she will probably be in for the remainder of her pregnancy because they obviously take bleeding very seriously.

Tried a few new beers recently. This one is Murder of Crows Black IPA by Refined Fool Brewing Co. It starts off like a creamy stout with a big mocha flavour and finishes with a nice hops blast. All of the malt balances out the bitter hops so you get a lot of hops flavour without it being too bitter. This is the first beer I've tried from this brewery and it was excellent.
