I'm for euthanasia. Someone who is terminally ill and they certainly going to die in a given time. Why prolong their suffering? It's just like putting to sleep to your dog/pet when it's their time. So we just end their suffering and life goes on.

Having spent more than a year day&night with a person on hospice who was in terrible pain that required a horrifying morphine addiction, and who frequently spoke about wanting the suffering to be over, and who I watched unnecessarily deteriorate mentally and physically, with the serious situations that arose as a result, it would be absolutely immoral for me to hold any other position than support for truly terminal people who want to end their lives while they still have some grip on reality and a couple good hours in the sun left in them.

a real concern in parts of canada is that when a place legalizes it, that people from the rest of the world will come for the service -- not a exactly a highlight you put on a travel tourism brochure.

Agreed though it is almost inconceivable it would be done at a GP's (General Practice - I'm not sure if they are called the same overseas) office. It would be a specialised field for sure.

Agreed and to segue the conversation a little Australia recently voted for gay marriage to be legalised. I support the position that you should not be forced to marry two people if it is against your beliefs, just don't get in the way of them.

Im assuming Australia followed other countries and implemented religious freedom to refuse to wed couples of their choosing within the their church. I support private and religious entities to refuse service, i don't support government officals / judges to refuse.

It's trickier when you start talking about another person choosing to pull the plug on life support

Since I'm the first, and only one so far, to vote 'No,' I feel need to give an explanation.

We live in a world of ever-advancing medical research, with the most powerful painkillers being described as hundreds of times more powerful than heroine. There's literally no reason why anyone in their final days should be in an amount of pain to wish they were already dead.

Add to that, the 'slippery slope' theory, that once euthanasia is commonly accepted by society and the medical community it will eventually become 'assisted suicide' to be used for the mentally ill and depressed.

These types of proposals are always sold with the best case scenarios being the only scenarios, without addressing the complicated and outright bad scenarios.
