Ah, LaserDisc. That awesome home video format that I never really did get to experience. When LaserDisc was big I had no real awareness of it. By the time I was old enough to have the money to buy my own electronics, DVD was just being introduced and that was the first video format that wasn't VHS that I got involved with.

But I kind of wish that I had been able to part of the elite LaserDisc club back in the day. Who here was a member? I bet y'all were some smug motherfuckers, being all like, "VHS? No, sir. That's some sub-par shit. We only allow LaserDisc in this home. Have you ever heard of a commentary? Probably not."

Never owned one but in middle school we did watch a documentary on one.

I wouldn't mind owning a laser disc of a film I'm very fond of.

That's pretty much Laser Disc's claim to fame at this point, isn't it?

Now that you mention it, I remember in my 9th grade social studies class we watched something on LaserDisc. I'm pretty sure that was the one and only time I encountered it in the world and can't for the life of me remember what we watched.

my uncle had one when i was a kid. we didn't watch a ton of movies on it when we visited but it always looked neat and sounded better then my vhs player (probably had to do with his audio setup). it was cool though to hear the extras some would come with, i also think i remember having to turn it over to watch the rest. i also remember my santa claus-esque science teacher had one in the classroom in 8th grade, and he would always tell us how cool LD's were, we even watched return of the jedi on it during class.

it wasn't ideal, but once i move into a bigger place i could easily see myself picking one up and some old classics to enjoy. There's something cool and charming about that old tech.

I had one and about 50+ movies. Most of the appeal was the extras unique to the format (deleted scenes, commentary, etc). What sucked was flipping the discs.

I still very occasionally watch a movie on VHS just for the hell of it. I wonder what LaserDisc would look like on an HDTV.

Yeah, in a pre-DVD era I'm sure that felt like some really special shit.

Depending on the extras, yeah. Movies like Lawnmower Man and Fatal Attraction included alternate endings. Basic Instinct restored some scenes that needed frames cut for ratings purposes. Brain Dead (i.e. Dead Alive) had some extra shit. JFK had a director's cut.

Didn't a lot of discs have director commentaries?

No I didn't, but I remember a friend of mine's parents having a video disc player. The tech was that they were a vinyl album.

Yeah, but it was always deleted scenes that I was interested in. Can't think of one title where I listened to and gave a shit about the commentary.

Because I'm a dork I just watched a short doc. about the technology of the lazerdisc player. I found it interesting that they are actually an analog media source.
