it's all about quality. You can probably buy em at some place after hitting up the bar, but i doubt they're awesome quality.
the ones that my family makes are packed with meat (ha ha). so i guess im used to a higher quality product.
I've got them from the highest rated spots in Phoenix and LA. Doubt your mom is much better at it.
If you need to incase any meat in mound of corn to serve it, it's not a culinary achievement to look down at others. Tamales are tastey, but they are steamed mounds of corn with some meat filling designed for an economical meal, not haute cuisine that's some flavor explosion. It's fucking corn and taco meat.
