Anyone a mechanic at a dealership?

How much do you think a GM dealership should charge to take out a GM 350 small block and install a new GM 383 complete small block in an old muscle car?
 
Too much. Dealerships will rape you on costs.
 
Have you even shopped around? Done any leg work? The impression that I'm getting is that you're very surprised at what they told you.
 
I don't think dealerships do that. They only work on newer cars. Usually those under warranty. No modifications to standard equipment. Find a good independent mechanic/garage. Labor cost should be around $1,000.

It'll cost a wholeeee lot I know that. Expect no less than 2500 just in labor IMO
 
Find an independent mechanic. Get suggestions from friends, family, co-workers, etc.

That said, small block removal in most cars is a breeze. Even counting fluids and some assembly work, I wouldn't expect to pay more than a couple of hundred for that if you're supplying the 383 to be used.
 
Anybody worth a damn could have that done before lunch.

Personally I’d find a hot rod specific shop, because they’re likely to have the small incidentals sitting around that pertain to a SBC, while a dealership is just going to have late model stuff and all metric hardware on the shelves. If you pay more than $7-800 for that job including fluids it’s the wrong shop IMO.
 
Dealerships are full of kids fresh out of UTI that don't know a god damn thing about removing and installing engines out of a muscle car.

Take it to a shop with older guys that have experience with your vehicle.

Exactly. I worked at three Chevy dealers in my early 20s. Nobody brought old muscle cars in for that kind of work. If they took the car to an actual shop to have any performance work done, it was typically a place that specialized in that kind of work. Like a speed shop or restoration shop.
 
I doubt you'd even find a dealership willing to do it. But as mentioned, even if you did that's not the place to take it.

I worked at a Ford dealership many years ago and most of the work was warranty work or prep work on trade in vehicles. We were "Factory Trained". When something new came out, they would send someone to the dealers to show them the procedures to use on them. It was often an accountant that just read the instruction manual and showed some slides.
 
I would expect them to charge you zero dollars and not do it because that's not what dealerships do
 
That's a job for a specialist shop dealing in specifically muscle cars u can find 1 or 2 in most decent size cities. A dealer will have no idea what to do n fuck ya. That's a job I would rather take my time n do myself.
